Default 502 Mpi

I am going to buy a used engine. It`s a 1996 502 MPI (Gen VI) 390 hours, it`s only been run in fresh water. Any thought on this engine? Good/bad, look out for, differences from the next model? When did Mercruiser change this model?

Have a leakdown test performed and Dynoed before you buy it. Thats up there in hours, especially if a real throttle jockey ran it.I think it was the same until the 496 came out. Buddy has a 1999 powerquest with 502mpi.

With care and good maintainence, you can get twice the hours out of that engine. I agree, do a compression and leakdown test. If all looks good, go for it.
