Try to get it as close to the center as possible. If you have twins, this will be easy. With a single, you don't want the pickup to be any closer than 12" from the drive. If it's too close, you'll disrupt the waterflow to the drive. Before you bought the pickup, I'm certain that you serched the tech section and read my many posts on the correct mounting height of the pickup. Hint-I want it to be adjustable.

Yeah Cord, I did a search but most of the post are kind of vage. I guess it depends on the boat. The pick up I bought has two studs on the tube to bolt through the transom, but there only 2 3\4 of in inch above the pick up hole. I know my transom where it meets the bottom of the hull is thicker than or close to being 2 1/2 inches thick so the tube would not even stick out from the bottom
