Default BW Trans puking out upper vent

My trannies appear to be blowing ATF out of the vent after extended WOT runs. I've been told to overfill them slightly, but even with the levels down to 3/4 full on the dipstick, they stull puke. At 3500rpm, they're fine.

What are my alternatives? Does a catch bottle that returns back into the sump exist? Where do they plumb in, and where can I get them? What's the "right" level to fill a BW trans?

Thanks,
Brian

best thing to do is plug the factory vent , get a piece of tubing , plastic, stainless whatever , and attach it to your fill tube , give yourself a foot or so and put a k/n clamp on breather at the top. call drew at drew marine and he will give you the same info , that's where i got this helpfull info.

Mercury used to make a catch can for those that connected to the vent hose. What you did was remove the vent with a pair of piers and tap in a barb fitting with a small hammer. Then you would run a vent hose, 1/4" I believe, up to the catch can on the transom. I have installed a few on Fountains with TRS and they work quite well.

Pwrbt33-- My 1998 Hustler Slingshot is set up that way. The Mercury owners Manuals that came with the boat specifically talks to them as expansion resevoirs. For what it's worth. --Lou

We have solved the puking problem on our modified units. Comes from a number of places internally. Any one of the solutions mentioned will work, for a while there was a factory kit that extended the dipstick with a t and hooked the vent into the T to put the fluid back in the sump. I think I have a couple left.

I just got back from a test run today. I pulled off the vent cap, stuck a 3/8" hose over the vent nipple, and ran it into the top of a bottle tie-wrapped to the transom. Looks like they've caught a half a pint each, after some decent WOT runs. Bilge is squeaky clean, yippie!

So now I just need to plumb this puke back into the sump. Marc, I'll call you in the morning and see about getting a pair of these shipped to me.

Thanks for everyone's help,
Brian
