Angry Dropped a valve, ruined the weekend

Saturday 1 of my '97 454 mags (250 hrs) dropped the #1 intake valve. The tip broke off with the keeper lands. I figure I'm into it for valves, springs, a push rod, possibly a guide, and a piston. I hope the head and block are OK. I'm nervous because the oil that dripped from the pushrod (bent) had water in it. the engine is clean except that intermixed oil from the push rod. I don't know where the water came from. Doesn't show on the dipstick and the head doesn't have any intermixed oil in the rocker valley. Any one seen this before? Looks like Saturday I'll be pulling the engine.

Yeah.. when I did it.. the head of the valve broke off and stuck in the piston at 4000rpm. Lets see, rod, piston, sleeve the block, repair the aluminum head, all kinds of fun.. Mine was caused by a stuck lifter. Long story, the engine builder put standard mains on a .010" crank.. never measured it. Galled the lifter and 30 min run time later it stuck at 4k..
Good luck.. hope it's not as bad for you.

Sorry to hear it. About two weeks ago, there I was 3900 rpm head for a lunch across Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans with a couple of buddies when all the sudden starboard engine drops to zero in about 3 seconds and locks up. Long story made short, sucked the #7 intake valve in and through the head which quickly allowed water be even distributed through the engine right up to the baser of the car.

Once we pulled it down, cracked #7 cylinder, two bent rods and cracked pistons and of course one junk 990 head. Total cost, a smooth $3,000.00 including the new stainless steel serve duty intake valves.

Yea, been there done that. Let me know what you find when you get it apart.

Popped off the head tonight. Bent #1 intake valve and push rod. Galled the end of the rocker, and broke part of the valve guide at the end. Piston has a shiny line on it and a small line from the valve but not too bad. Head and block look to be OK. As far as damage goes, I kind of lucked out. It could be a lot worse! I think the intermixed oil is just from reversion.
