Default BBC Merlin Head Questions

I have an opportunity to get at a good price Merlin 345cc heads (bare).

Is it over kill to put them on a 454/330hp MkIV that will have some mild work done to it. Going .030 over, and haven't decided on the cam yet, but would like to go with a roller, upgraded manifold and carb. I'm not looking for extreme HP, just bump it up to 400hp and get more RPM's. Or should I get a cheap set of 781 or 049 large ovals and go that route.

Thanks

I'm not a head expert by anymeans but i think that would be way overkill for the kind of rpm's your running, not enough velocity. normally aspirated your motor would have to be wound to the moon for them to function properly,Smitty

I agree. You would be hurting yourself with that big a head. The velocity would be terrible.

That's what I thought. I'm going to find some 781 or 049's.

Buy the heads, sell the engine. Put the heads on a 572.

Jest funnin' ya

Do some searching on 330s on the board. The 400 HP recipe has been well thrashed out before.

I've always heard oval ports make the best power for under 500hp 454's..

I have a pair of 310cc Merlins already set up for marine use, cheap. They would make more horsepower than GM heads. Call Ian Blain at 248-701-8378.
