Box's don't fail and add speed but 1100 horse mills tend not to re-light (quickly) after hard runs on hot humid days, suddenly life sucks in tight quarters. In addition, unlike racing, other boaters don't understand your inability to stop and reverse quickly so you find yourself in some serious pucker factor situations where you look like the village idiot 
The only tranny's that have held mine are BAM's Cyborg 1500 "dry sumps" if you're gonna really use the boat in poker runs I suggest them. Typically you run the crap outa the boat then go immediately into tight conditions to pick up cards, if there is a wind or current it can get real exciting as you say your little prayers before you hit the starters each time.

WICKEDWON probably runs his boat harder than anyone I know,,,,,,,ooops forgot about NAUTIKITTY, but WW is running BIG power and probably has been through everyone's trannies. The opinion I have is either the BAM or Huber in the biggest meanest tranny either sell. I use gear boxes (crash boxes, I haven't hit anything YET) and have good success. I agree with Jim in that other people don't know you have boxes and have a tendency to get in your way (yelling and screaming). I have CHIEF 950's and so far light everytime I need them to. On a big poker run, you will need to have a "crew" with you to fend off the dock or other people when things get tight at the card stops or end of the run. Or, you could do like I do and plan your run to where you are the last boat in (i.e. beverage stops along the way) this way, all the comotion at the marina is over by the time you get there. SCS makes a shiftable crash box that uses a dry automotive type clutch and a pnuematic actuator for shifting. It doesn't rob any HP it will still slip like a tranny and you have to plumb in all the air lines.
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is you need to figure out which way YOU want to go, covenience of trannies in tight quarters, or reliability of crash boxes. Good luck with your choice.
