I'm currently looking at a boat with Kurt's Marine, Bandit 800 SC's. I've tried contacting them a couple times the last few days to find out how the motors are set up, but they are getting ready for the race this weekend and couldn't get back to me.

Anyway, I first choice is to removeg the blowers and run them natrually aspirated, second lower the boost to 2-3 lbs so I can run 650 hp or so depending on how the motors are set up.

I am wondering if anyone can tell me what compression ratio Kurt run's in his 800SC package?

I am affraid that if the comp. ratio is below 8.5:1 I won't be able to make any power without the blower. The long block is 572 cu. in.

Anyone know the answer? I'm going to post in the tech section as well.

Kurt called me back this morning. Turns out he didn't build the motors. Although I love the boat, I think I will have to pass if the owner can't show me documentation on the motors.

Yep, you're right. That is the reason I was going to de-tune the motors.

Well, I found out more this afternoon. The bottom ends were built by Kurts back in 95' but didn't have blowers. When the new owner got the boat he had the motors rebuilt by Performance Marine (now out of business) and had the blowers added.

They are running 4-5 LBS of boost and compression ratio is 8:1, to low for a NA motor. I would need to lower the boost to 2-3 lbs.

I wonder how many hours I would get with that kind of setup and how much power?

Panther- Merc 800SC's had a 7.5:1 cr/700hp at the prop. How many hours on the bottom end since being rebuilt by Performance Marine? How many hours on the top end? I assume it's a 4.5x4.5 572? The 4-5 lbs of boost is modest and should add to the reliability. Not knowing what components are in the motor, I would think 200 hrs before refreshing the top with a toatal rebuild anywhere from 400 to 500 hrs based on usage, leakdown etc. Don't know what hull they would be in but the torque and responsiveness of blown 572's is impressive. Just trying to help.

The motors were completely rebuilt in late 2003 and now have 20 hours. I can deal with 200 hr refresh of the top end and 4-500 hrs on the bottom end. I still want to de-tune the motors and hope to get more time out of them by doing it. For right now, I'm keeping the boat "model" a secret, but its a 95', non stepped boat. I also want to de-tune the motors because it has IMCO Extreme SC drives. I know they are good to about 700 hp, but I don't want to blow them up.
