Does anyone know what the width restrictions are for trailering without having to get a wide load permit? Does it change by state?

Thats what he is referring to. If you are under 10', I don't feel you will have a problem. I tow 12' wide and only get a permit going real long distance. I am head down to Key West and I have a permit. Rules are different in everystate and you have to know the rules in each state, permit or not.

You are one lucky person or you really have a give of Gab. My trailer is 8' 6". Going to a Poker run in Ohio I had the occasion to be stop on the Ohio pike. The Trooper actually measured the boat and found out that my Cat had a inch and a half overhang on each side on the gunnels and he had us go to the next exit and get a special ticket for over size.. Think he had a badge on his underwear also, Gungho!! However, I have pulled the same outfit back and forth to Nevada severial times..But Damm you at 12 feet!!

102" at the widest point of either boat or trailer are permitted on interstate highways. On secondary roads it may be a problem. If in fact you are over the 102" width, the restrictions vary from state to state. Some restrictions include day and weekday travel only. In other words you may only travel from dawn to dusk and Monday-Friday, and may require an escort. Your best bet would be going to a truckstop and pickup a commercial atlas. They have alot of information state to state with phone numbers included for permits. One agency is transceiver that will fax you a temp. Another thought I would sugggest is when its time to stop, find a truck stop where there's plenty of room to move.

Thanks for all the responses. My guess is I will be ok with 8'9" on the boat at its widest point, the trailer will probably still be 8'6".

More interesting from the site above is the trailer length limits, many of them 40 feet. The boat is 43', so the trailer is going to be upwards to 46-48 feet. Makes me wonder how sticky the officers will be on the length.

I'm towing 9'6" on a 8'6" trailer. So far no problems. I really doubt if you'll have a problem. In Mich. there is no length restriction on recreational tralers.

I believe that the max lenght is 75' with out a permit.
