I knew a guy who had a 30/31 ft mid to late 80's that had a lot of rotten wood issues 
.
Of course this boat was much older than a 98. Other than that it rode fantastic and handle nasty wate very well.

Dad had a 1969 18' IMP from 1969 to 2001. Held together VERY well; but it was completely babied. 350 hours total or something like that, and sold it with the original engine/build.

I know of a 1992 31' IMP located here in Missouri that the owner has been contemplating selling. A very clean boat with lots of updates. The boat is all white and has 454's w/ bravos, let me know if it would be of interest to your friend and I will be sure to get you all the details...
