Tower.

I started with the Wild Cat SS, twin motor, twin 6 cell batteries.

Worked pretty good, but when the speed control goes (Got about a year out of mine), dont replace with the same stock one, go to a nice Novak ESC, ~100$.

Combo from tower was around 200 bucks, boat, motors, radio, batteries, charger, everything needed.

Great Planes (who make the boat) also make a 27" V same setup, twin motor/batteries. Also make a 20" single motor boat.

Check out the Traxxas Villan IV, took a little more to drive than my wild cat, but lots more things to tinker with on that, and I believe it comes with an ESC out of the box.

If you want something really cool in electric you need to build one from scrach. This is an Aeromarine hull with 4 water cooled electrics, 2 drives, 2 speed controls, and 28 cells.

I'm a little partial to Phantoms, so I recommend this one. Watch the video-

Oh, I got it. Look no further. Forget the "real" scale R/C boats.
Small son, eh? The kid won't appreciate a fast electric. He'll crash it anyhow.
Here's what he needs, and I'm GLAD you posted this cause I gotta get some foe my kids and I FORGOT about it.

These little mothers are QUICK, they turn INSTANTLY, can bounce off everything, can run over each other, and THEY ALWAYS TURN RIGHTSIDE UP AND KEEP ON TRUCKING. These are a RIOT!!!

"Zig Zag Racer" from Hobby Zone (I hear there is a ZZR 2 also).

Absolutely what you need for your kid.
We had 3 on the water at once playing smash and bash. We were laughing so hard we were crying (and no we hadn't been drinking). No damage after 7 thousand bashes. And they launch over each other like a video game.
