I have 2 600 CI engines which are wet sump. I was thinking about going to dry sump. I found there are quite a few dry sump pumps out there, but there are several differant stage pumps available. 3, 4, 5 and 6 stage. Can anyone tell me which pump would work best for me and if it's worth the trouble to do this. Thank you

With dry sump your stuff will stay lubed at high and sustained RPM's. Conventional system may get a second of starvation and you are screwed.

In 25yrs I have never had a oil pump rod just fail. Just a thought.

As an option to consider, Eickert makes a pan with a very large outlet to your remote pump. Internally the pan has some very large magnets to help catch ? in case something lets go. The outlet is close to 1" and can feed a belt driven pump. If you plan to do any valve spring oiling or internal spray bars for lifters you need a pump with adjustable pressure and the ability to handle the volume needed. This style and dry sumps can do that. KE's is a little less $ than a dry sump system.

dry sumps are cool I run one on my race car. They are more complex than a standard oilign system and tehrefore have more parts to break. Hotpursuit doe shave point abtou loosing a belt. I know on teh race car its a gear driven pump do they make ones like taht for a big block? If so i'd think that would be the way to go.

What do the different stages do. How many stage is recommended?

My pumps actually have two scavage lines from the oil pan. Using Hamburger pans and O-Berg filters. The O-Bergs have a very fine mesh screen, their own pumps and filter out the smallest particles of metal etc. They have a cap on top that acts as an inspection plate. The cap is easily removed in a minute and you can readily see if anything suspiciious may be occuring in your engine. The stages depend on how many incoming and out going lines you intend to use.

I'm not an expert but I believe the stages send oil to different areas of the engine.

I would use a wet external setup.Simple and much cheaper.I would use a dry sump setup if i was looking for every last bit of power like in a race application.
