SSM-5 vs. Arneson #6

I would just like to get some opinions of fellow OSO'ers and people who have more mechanical knowledge than myself. I am wondering the pros and cons of each of these drive setups on a 36 Nor-Tech with 525's or possibly the new Merc 600.

after working on many drives including 6s the arneson ASD-8s
are impressive and massive inside ....input shaft and output are 2.5"........2.160" where the ball bearings press on ....bearing od is 4.75" there are two 7" long sprockets on the shafts that can be changed for underdrive to overdrive with many combos for shaft speed vs prop pitch and diameter.... there is a 7"wide silent chain looks like a giant cam chain connecting the two. arnesons like to turn in and the prop shaft should be about 2" out of the water at speed(unlike most boats u keep dropping the drives as you gain speed because the boat lifts out of the water) BUT u can drop the hammer at 3000 and hear 14-71s come to life and paste you back in the seat and know the drives will not break

Amen. The brother is telling you the truth.
Pic of chains on an ASD # 8.
I had a tranny that keep kicking out occassionally at hard throttle at HI RPM's. Oil looked perfect. Sent the tranny to Huber. He calls and said there is nothing wrong with the tranny the clutch packs look great. You must have a bad drive. I explained I have ASD # 8's. He said, "Oh, Ok, I will disassemble the tranny". 30 minutes he calls back and the main shaft had been cracked in 1/2. The key way was the only thing that was driving the tranny and officially finally decided to retire itself. Amazing!
Hopefully that explains the durability of an Arneson.
Oh yea, by the way, those are blower belts off my 1071's laying there that help give it the chain some perspecive.
