Default Lifter looks funny

Anyone ever see a lifter with this eyebrow shape before? I tore down both engines today and was wrapping up the lifter removal/inspection on the second engine when I saw this one. I think I know what I need to do now, new cams and lifters, but why do you guys think this one lifter has a problem. The lobe visually looks ok. I did drop a valve in this engine last year whilst running this cam and I suspect it is from then, yet I did not notice it at that time. If this was caused then, wouldn't it be surpising that I never wiped this lobe out after running hard for the last 1/2 season? Engine was running strong at shut down.

It looks like the heat-treat on the lifter base has been worn through.

Actually the crown looks normal other than the eyebrow. I can faintly catch my finger nail on the eyebrow so it is not just a metallugical thing. Damn I break a lot of chit

Ok, just kidding, I like breaking chit

I need to investigate further tomorrow to figure out if this was the hole that dropped an exhaust valve head 4th of July. That valve ended up in the intake manifold, so if this was caused then it would have been the intake valve lobe. I am just suprised I didn't see it when I built that engine new in July. Unless there is something else that would cause it that I am unaware.

Check that cam lobe and see what it looks like. That lobe may be starting to go south on you or like has been suggested before the lifter stopped turning. Anyway, whatever the reason it is suspect and I would find out why.
Please let us know!
