Got an MP3 player for Christmas.

My offshore has a sterio with cassette where I can plug in the MP3 player using the cassette adparter.

My center console has no radio...so here's the question...instead of buying a radio to interface the MP3 player into....can I use an car amp with good speakers and have the MP3 player as the input to the amp and use the MP3 player volume control to adjust listening?

As long as your MP3 player has analog outs it will work. We did this in high school with walkmans.

Sounds like a pain. I would install a kill switch to the power-on lead to the amp.
This way in an emergency you won't be fumbling with the little buttons on the MP3.

Yup will work fine. You will just have to have a switch on the dash for a remote turn on for the amplifier.

hey jon, i've got an ipod with itrip which plays through the radio with no wires...it's an fm transmitter. it works pretty good but sometimes quality is poor and you get static. any thoughts on how to add this on to an existing system? do they make output adapters that will plug into an amp? if so can you provied a link? many thanks!

Sean: Are you talking about for your car or boat? If for your boat if you locate the IPOD near your antenna it should work very well. One of the reasons that the FM Modulators do not always work so well is that the transmitter is very low power (so you do not interfear with other peoples cars). The transmitter needs to be located near the antenna as close as possible for best results. So in the case of most european cars with the antenna in the back or roof they some times do not work so hot. There are IPOD adaptors for lots of cars if you let me know what you are talking about then maybe I can see what is available for you.
