I want to up-date the black dash in my 1990 scarab cv. Would like to paint it white, but I have a lot of cracks in the gellcoat, almost like lacquer checks on a old hood. Is there any easy solution? Would gell hold up better then paint? What are the steps needed to take... Thanks Any advice is a step in the right direction.....

Gel would hold up better than paint, but there are some dam good epoxys out there. Sounds like sand, fill, sand, paint. You could probably even go over it with a west system type product and then gel or paint the epoxy after you sand it.

But black is coming back.

If you decide to gel.... not that difficult but don't underestimate the fumes and how stupid they will make you.

This may sound like a stupid question, but what product do you suggest to fill the cracks?

The cracks will come back unless ground out completely. I am saying it will involve taking all the gel off the dash if you have that many cracks. Light repair will look good for a few months only. I would suggest a dash panel as it is a much easier fix and they look really cool to boot.

I fixed the cracks in my Gel coat 5 or 6 times. Then I would have to have the paiter repaint it only to crack again. There is only 1 logical solution, carbon Fiber panels.
