Volvo 502 ?

I think the main difference in fuel system. The problem with VP is there is little to no performance aftermarket. You can certainly do something with it, but I think you'll need to go down to the long block and replace everything from the intake up or at least go internal then modify. Going internal you can pretty much do whatever you want.
It comes down to whether you want to go the extra expense. You just can't bolt on a Whipple like you can a Merc.

There is plenty to be done with that engine. I believe the volvo comes with the same intake as the merc 500efi. You would have to change a bunch of parts, (cam, lifters, valves, springs, maybe the injectors) & reprogram the ecm. This will make a 500 efi out of it and it will run very nicely.
