Default bravo I hard/slow shift into reverse - advice?

my 1988 port bravo shifts very slowly ( due to very high effort ) into reverse. I don't think it is the cable, but will check by disconnecting and moving shifter. goes into forward (pulling cable) fine, but not into reverse ( pushing cable)
other drive is just fine.

some have mentioned cone clutch? what other reasons?
should i tackle this myself? I do have a good marine mechanic who has a mobil shop now. should i jsut let him fix it,

what's involved if cone clutch?

thanks

Someone recently mentione dthat if a Bravo is going into reverse slow and hard, it's usually the gears. Can't find the post off hand but it was just in the last 1-2 days I think.

When mine did that, it was the cable that goes into the drive.
