30' OL vs 30 Cig Vice.........Let the games begin
#1
I guess I am opening a huge can of worms here but I can't seem to get this out of my mind.
A couple of days ago i went and looked at a 30' Cig Vice with 496 ho's and XR drives. I was stunned to say the least. I thought I was going to be jealous of that boat but what I saw was nothing short of horrible.
The first thing I noticed was that the screws in the rub rail were already dripping rust down the rail ( this is a new boat with 0 hours). Then I looked at the paint, chipping in many spots, more than just transport chips. Next, the rigging in the engine compartment, nothing special, not bad but no stainless hoses or hidden wires, it essentially looked like the way baja rigs it, functional but not pretty.
Then I noticed that the screws holding in the bolsters were stripped out partially on many of the screws and also starting to rust. The foot rests at the bottom of the dash were simply screwed in and had a horrible caulk job done. The cabin interior was fine except that underd the couches the storage hatches were just fiberglass covers that had no latches and had at least a 1/2 of play all the way around them.
The worst was the paint job..........overspray on all the lines of the boat, noticable at a glance ( about 5 feet!) and very poor blend lines.
Anyway the cost of this boat was 210K with a nice triple axle trailer.
Down the road was a 30 ol with same power and bravo drives
on a nice trailer for 117K and the baja, although it did have some issues were not as extensive or as noticeable .
I guess what I am trying to say is why the hell would anyone pay 90K+ more for a cig. I don't have any real reason for positng this except I guess to reinforce my decision to own a baja. I don't mean to crack on cigs or say that overall they are not better boats but the workmanship on that boat was simply poor...............................Thoughts?

That's really unfortunate. Definitely a let down in my book.
I saw the write up in am recent magazine. Liked what I saw until I saw the price. Way too much money for that boat. Cig or not I cannot see spending that much on a 30' boat with stock HO's.

I guess the justification would come at resale time. Just like a HD motorcycle and a Yamaha. The Yamaha has more h.p. , uses less fuel, is smoother, cost 1/2 the price but when resale time comes fuggetaboutit. **** like this pisses me off but thats the fact of life. I like when the Fountain guys **** on Baja, then I look in the classified to see twice as many Fountains for sale than Baja's. Another example that comes to mind is the Subaru WRX turbo and a Porsche Carrera. Subura is faster 0-60, is very close on top end, 1/4 the cost, but do the ladies like a Suby....NO. Just a fact of life.

Cigarette makes an AWESOME boat.
Their styling for the 38 Top Gun and longer boats is first class and set the standards in my opinion.
But as for the Vice, it is simply UGLY and overpriced.
I am not sure why they are wasting their time with it?
One thing you have to admit about Baja, even if you are not a Baja fan, is that the styling and lines are very pleasing to the eye!

I won't even touch this thread
It is unfortunate that this 'new' boat is in such bad condition.
I can tell you this. Cigarette's goal was to build an "entry level" boat to open the market to more buyers. The asking price of a 30 Cig is usually right around 190k however, I have heard of people being able to negotiate the price down to the high 150's.

I didn' t mean to knock cigs or anything I was just dissapointed that this bat was in such piss poor shape. I have allllllways loved cigs and I have wanted one for a long time (38 TG or 35 playboy), but this just disgusted me.
I also want to clear up what I have said. I am not saying that I think baja builds a better or stronger boat or that this particular boat was built poorly , I just thought the finish work was very poor for any boat especially a top rated manufacturer. I am also not compaing Cig to Baja as a whole, But I am comparing the 30 Vice to the 30 Ol.

After reading this I spoke with friends of mine at PBM who crawled around the 30 Vice at the show. They didn't see the things you were refering too and thought it was up to the caliber Cig usually produces. Probably not the same boat though. It sounds to me as though the boat you looked at was beat! It's too bad that a dealer would represent a boat like this as a new boat when it gives the impression that ALL the 30 Vices may be of similar poor quality.
I've never seen one in person and would love the chance to crawl around one and get a first hand look.
