28 Skater
Tell me what you guys know about this 28 and how they run with the 2.5's. Are the 2.5's ok or should you go with 300's??
http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.c...o17668-en.html Thanks Dan |
2.5's are nice engines but require a re-ring at 140-150hrs depending on how they are ran. 300's require less maintence and are heavier than the 2.5's. If the engines have low hours and prove to be in good shape I would keep the 2.5's.

I love my 28 skater .The 28 rides great! The 2.5`s sound great my first set lasted me 150hrs before they blew ,my second set lasted 26hrs,bad gas and they blew. Now I am in the final stages of re- rigging should have my 300xs in the next few weeks.I hope now I will finally have reliable power!
Now all I have to worry about is getting Good Gas! That 28 looks like a nice boat! I would sell the 2.5`s and buy some 300xs with warranty!!! |
Thanks for the info. It should be in CT by the weekend. I wish we bought it but a good friend of ours did. He went and sea trialed it today and liked it enough to buy it. I'll be going out with him to pick it up. He also has his 42 Fountain for sale if you Skater guys know anyone looking for one. He is new to cats so do you guys have any tips on running these 28?? We may have something to run with his new toy by the end of the season as well.:D:D Skater or Motion.:D
His 42 http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.c...o17793-en.html Thanks |
Just tell him to take it easy for a while. They are great boats but very fast and the get short in length quick.

i'd be happy to help you guys out. pm me

I met the owners of that boat 2 weeks ago at the Crabshell in Stamford. He said that there were about 100 hrs on the motors. I have heard they need rebuilds around 200 hours. We left the docks right behind them and the 2-stroke smoke they emitted was incredible when they popped the throttles. At the end of the harbor, they took off side by side with my buddy's 32 skater. They raced across to LI(32 won), but my buddy said that 28 ran great. Here is a pic of teh 28 next to the 32 at the docks.

Of course it was! My bud was worried he was going to lose because he had the wrong lower units on his boat, which severely limit top speed, but he said he still got 'em. Tell your friend the new owner, that once he gets used to it, we can set up a re-match!

Hows your buddy liking the ride of the 32B in the sound. Where does he keep the boat?? A rematch would be in order.:D The old owners of the boat asked me what the 32 was running for power and speed. They seemed surprised when I told them.
He loves the boat, but wants a 40 footer. In big seas, it gets tossed around. I've only been on it in flat water, so I cant really comment on what its like. |

I like how they run with Triple tweaked 2.5s

I think that may be a friend of mines old boat. I think this boat once belonged to offshore racer Paul Whittier.

Long story short, he blew a drive and the gear ratios got all messed up(one motor was running 1000 RPM's higher than the other). 2 weeks ago, when he raced the 28, he had the wrong gear ratio in both drives, which nets him a top speed of about 98-101 mph. I believe the correct ratios were supposed to show up last week, so they should be installed by now. With the correct ratios, it runs 121, so your buddy would be in trouble:D It has twin 575SC's with XR drives. We both launch in Norwalk.

The guys with the 28 said it ran 106-107 with the 2.5's. I wasn't in either of the boats(I was way back in their rooster tails!), but it looked pretty close from what I could tell. I was told that they were running right around 100 mph. There were some rollers out, but overall it wasn't too bad.

We'll we went out on the maiden voyage today. This boat is a freaking blast!!! The boat accelerates like no tomorrow and jumps right up on plane. We encountered all types of water today. In dead calm water we ran it up to 7100 rpm but the gps stoped working so we had no clue how fast we were running. In 1-2ft chop the boat flew over everything and cruiser wakes. In a constant 2-3 footers it ran great again. This is such a fun boat. I got to throttle and drive in a following 3 foot sea. Then the ride back it got ruff. Good 3 to 4's. Thats when the ride went down hill a bit but we still ran about 40-45mph. I think. The gps still wasn't working. At idle speeds in the rough stuff you sure got wet but only once or twice while running in the rough. All in all I'd say this boat is really sweet and very fun to drive. Im definitely sold on cats and the outboards are very cool as well. Now all we need is a 35 or 36 cat with outboards to run in the rougher water.
