24 Skater

Considering a 24 Skater to use as a lake boat. Probably looking mid-1980's to mid 1990s based on advertised prices.

What should I expect to pay for one (say 1990 as a mid point)? What should I look out for that's specific to this boat?

Thanks,

Sean

It'll depend on the engines and the condition, but I'd say anywhere from $30,000 to $40,000 for something decent.

A couple of years ago, you couldn't find any of them under $35,000, and that's if you could find them.

Recently, there seems to be a lot more of them for sale. Check over on screamandfly.com in the classfieds. ;)

Dude! Sweet! 08-30-2007 03:15 PM

Dang! Busted by another Pantera guy! :D Thanks man. I had a look. I saw a couple there and a couple on the classifieds here. I wondered if the price ranges were reasonable or not.

What are the common issues with the older 24s?

Stormrider 08-30-2007 03:24 PM

Sean, buy a new 25 predator!!!!
They are making some real nice stuff.

All it takes is a dollar and a dream, Rob...

Considering something older just to bang around at the lakes with. The 28 Pantera is too much boat for the smaller lakes we have out here (as are 90% of the other boats on the lakes!). Probably all a fools-errand anyhow, but you never know! :D

Nice to know that all of us Pantera guys apparently have Skater envy!

I just bought a 24 Skater- 1989. Give me a call anytime, I'm happy to help. I spent several months looking and asking questions so I might be able to save you some time.

Ya should have kept the 24 Pantera for that:D

Dude! Sweet! 08-30-2007 08:04 PM

Man! Thank god I didn't get caught like this when I used to go out on my college girlfriends!

Loved the 24 Pantera and miss that little boat, but it wouldn't run 100. At least not with me in it! :D

This one was for sale on craigslist Detroit $27500.00. A friend of mine raced it as Double Cross years ago, it was at good boat then.

The best deal on a cat right now is the 30 Spectre that was completely redone in 2005, Twin 300 mercs 1/4 canopies and everything new, That boat is a steal !!!
he is only "Asking" 63k. By the time you buy an older 24 Skater an freshen it up and go through the boat like you would have to on any older boat, i.e. rigging, motors, interior, paint etc. you will probably have the same if not more money out of pocket. Only buy turn key, be on the water more!!!

Biggest issue is "insurance" !!

motion 09-13-2007 05:15 PM

boat available

i have a 25 motion that will be available in oct if you are interested, very comperable to the 24.

SCZack 09-13-2007 05:25 PM

The 24 is actually not that bad on insurance if you have the right agent and have been with the same company for a long time. For some reason they seem more concerned with the 28's and above. Price tag maybe??

Dude! Sweet! 09-13-2007 06:23 PM

Yah, I got a pretty good quote (sub $800) from Insurance God (empowermarine.com) on OSO. He told me that value, power, size, experience, and where you boat are all factors.

Seems like all the people really shouting about insurance are looking at big cats with moster power. And also sort of seems like they're the people who are getting into a big cat with moster power as their first cat experience ever (and I don't know Thunderduck, his situation or any of that, I'm basing this on what I've read in the IF section and from talking to agents).

Thanks for the offers guys! Still not sure what's going to come of this... I've made an offer on one boat but it may or may not work out. There's a lot of moving pieces. To be honest, if this one doesn't work out, I'll probably wait until I sell my race car and then go with something a bit cheaper and smaller for an occasional use lake boat, with an eye to move up to a 36 for ocean use in a few years.

Does anyone have any further information on the history or incident with that boat mentioned above? I see it for sale for quite a long time and was wondering if the integrity of the boat was affected or if the incident with the fatality/boat involved any type of crash or damage?
