Jack Plates
I think I'm going to keep my 250SXs on my 28 Skater for now and save the bucks. I would like to get 2 to 5 more MPH out of it. Now I'm getting 98MPH at 6200RPM and it's not easy .Would Jack plates help ,and what about the 4 blade props from Throttle Up I'm hearing so much about .Do they work? Thanks Frank
|
ANY outboard can get gins from a Jackplate !!!! What size boat do you have ? I have said this before and have many hours of prop testing in my race boat , the ONLY time more blades will help is if you have a high slip # , and cats don't for the most part . If fact more blades = less MPH most of the time . If you want a holeshot , or pin to pin speed , more blades are the answer .

No, Aluminium, model #65012 ML-65. $400.00 for two. |
frank save your money and buy a 30 the 2007 in the classifieds is awsome thets the ticket just kidding really the boat is like brand new you will love it
|
Thats cheap , they list for 300 each . I paid 1500.00 for a pair os Stainless CMC plates , just wanted to be sure that a 300 won't fall off in the Rough ! On a 28 youll be fine , the Transom will fall off first in really rough stuff ( 4 ft plus )

Might want to consider hydraulic jack plates. They offer the best of both worlds.
Down for take off... Up for speed. You can't beat it. With manual jackplates, the setting for best top end may make it tough or impossible to get on plane. I had a hydraulic unit on a boat years ago and had a friend with the same boat/same setup but manual jackplate. The difference was night and day. It's one of those things that is win-win. the only drawback is the added cost but well worth it IMO. |

I agree Hyd is nice , but only on a bass boat or heavy vee-bottom . From all of OB Skaters Ive seen , none had Hyd Plates .
Larry |
So you think Hyd plates are not necessary. Is there a disadvantage other than price.I get some shallow water around my dock sometimes.is one stronger than the other ? thanks Frank
|
Don, the setback is 5-1/2". I will weigh them and calculate shipping to you.
|
On a Cat your prop shaft is higher than the bottom and if you could trim up in very low water and the hull will drag bottom before the prop stops making forward movement . I don't think CMC recommends a Hyd plate for extreme offshore use . I went with Stainless plates , very , very exspensive .

Hey Philip
I understand what your saying it makes a lot of sense. So I think I'l go with mechanical, wonder if they'll make a difference. I think the plates and the right props will give me the 2-4 mph I'm looking for. Thanks Frank PS thanks to every one for the input. |
Frank The Ones You Want Are CMC 65013 Heavy Duty Off shore
|
Those are the ones I bought m they Have Stainless steel side rails . I paid 1500 for a pair , you can see them under my 32 resto post
Larry |
The CMC website shows #65012 all aluminum and #65212 with steinless steel rails .I dont see# 65013? Thanks
|
The part # 65013 was a 2 inch adj model which is no linger avail . I still have the Boxes for my Jacks , they are 65212 Stainless models , they are F***ing heavy !!!
Larry |
The stainless ones are way overkill and way heavy, the will also move your CG back a bit with all of the weight in the transom. I don't know if I've ever seen Skater with the stainless.
|
I wanted Alum plates but once I said I'm going with 2-300 opti's . CMC in no way shape or form would they stand behind a Alum plate on a 32 Skater . They said Maybe OK on a Lake boat 21-24 or bigger lake boat 28
|
They are covering there you know what, but here are plenty of 300's out there on Alum. The weight of the stainless we definetley change your CG

For the record the only part that is Stainless are the engine side angles and the bolts , the rest of it is Alum
|
I spoke to CMC and they said the all aluminum are all need #65012. They only recommend the stainless for V8 outboards . Thanks for all your comments
PS Will the jack plates gain me any speed??? |
They told me the same thing at first , until I told them the boat is a 32 that will go in very rough water and the said the alum would be fine for a smaller lake boat . For what a pair of new 300 Opti's cost , I now for sure they will not fail . Again I think the Transom will fall off on a 28 before the plates fail ! I have seen a few weakened and cracked trasoms on 28 with 300's
Larry |
Thanks Larry. I'm Running 250XSs they maybe a little lighter . But will I see any benefit speed wise with jack plates and will there be a difference in handling?
|
Thanks
|
Every outboard on the Planet will benifit from a Jackplate ! Setback = higher gearcase position = less drag = more MPH . Just raise it slow and keep eye on temps
