Spin in or out ??

I know most Skaters spin in. I was spinning in and loved the way it carried the bow. When I re- rigged with the new 300xs I decided to spin out. The only reason I did was that someone once told me that it was safer in rough water to spin out rather than in. Is this true??

I turn mine in and have switched it back just to see if I liked it. I did notice the boat turn better at speed. However in a straight top speed run the boat became much more flighty. I bought my boat and they motors were spinning out, spinning in I was about 4-5 mph faster.

What were your experiences?

stainless 06-03-2009 06:59 PM

Depends on the boat and set up , generally speaking , spinning out is safer as the boat has a tendancy to self right if it lands on it's side . Spinning in is usually a little faster in the straight but a little more flighty.

Try it in GD or the racers sections. We've been talking about this lately at a few of the race sites and from what Ive heard others say, its exactly whats been said here. :bunny:

Does this apply for "V" bottoms also? I'm fighting myself, in or out ?

On most non step v's in will give you bow lift. However, engine height and other applications can change that. Look up the response Tres Martin gave on this topic. All hulls respond differently. I do know that in on your boat will make docking more difficult. It will probably be slightly faster on the top end. I would talk to others with straight bottom boats to see what they think.

Steve it all depends on how big she is some you cant spin at all but most of the little ones you can spin we call those spinners hope this helps

On some of the little spinners you can even mount them backwards!:evilb:

Swapped the drives " spinning In" today, Man what a difference ! I spun in with my modified 2.5`s a few years back and it rode well, a little loose though. I dont know if the weight of the 300xs motors made a difference, but it rode Awesome!! Ran right across the waves, felt very little. Smooth and Stable , only thing I did noticed it took a good bit longer to get on plane even with the drives tucked under.

Steve
Gary Ballogh and I have spent countless hours setting up my 32B and I'm spinning in ( I'll never go back to spinning out) and like you I have 300xs's. One thing you may want to look at is motor height, inward rotation lifts the bow and pulls the transom down. You may find ( depending on water pressure) that you can raise the motors.

Paul, thanks. That is next on my list.I had Skater make the water ramps so I should be able to at least raise 1/8". Will let you know how it turns out.
What kind of water pressure #s are you seeing?
Steve

Steve
I see 10-12 lbs in flat water. Usually however the water here isn't flat so with the spikes I'll see 12-15.

How are the 300xs's working out for you, any issues yet?

dreamboater 08-10-2009 06:48 AM

I have been spinning in for a long time.

Question for you guys, how do you like turning the boat at slow speeds?

danrad 08-10-2009 02:51 PM

Lanier

Hey Offshoresteve, do you go out to Lanier often? I just bought a boat and will be out on Lanier on most weekends. I'm just getting some seat time right now. DR.

tzrider 08-10-2009 09:58 PM

Dreamboater

At slow speeds mine turns like it is on rails.

24skaterVA 08-11-2009 07:01 AM

Turning mine in it seemed to take alot of the "hop" out of the boat. The only problem w/ spinning mine in is the shifters are backwards, I need to figure something out without having to re-rig the boat

Yes I am out there a good bit. What kind of boat did you buy?

300XS are great! had a issue at first and blew a powerhead @ 26hrs (someone @ Merc did not tighten a rod bolt tight) warranteed and no further problems:drink:
Have about 60+ hrs on the motors. Burning about 30gals per hr @ 90mph Can`t beat that!

Boat turns fine ,only negative outcome is it takes a longer to get on plane. Boat used to "pop" on plane now it planes out like a normal performance boat.

All you need to do is swap the cables on the shifters:drink:

30 Spectre with 300XS's, I'm still getting seat time right now. I will be out there about every weekend!

offshoresteve 08-12-2009 07:46 PM

I think I saw you last Sun afternoon ,I was headed south through the big water @ about 90+:drink:
Will look for you this weekend.
Take your time getting used to your cat, they are a totaly "different animal" than V`s. Good luck ,have fun and be safe.
Steve

danrad 08-12-2009 09:27 PM

Hi Steve, I was out quite a bit on Saturday, I have a little cat experience with a 25. This 30 is a little different, but I'm taking my time and will until I get I get a little more seat time. I have to take my daughter out this Saturday on her new tube with my 23 Stingray but I will be out all next weekend. Look out for the Stingray it's about a 60mph rocket!!!!!!

Along with the powerhead that blew @ 26hrs , add a sportmaster that blew Sat @ 60hrs total time.

300XS on my fishing boat:
1 starboard powerhead around 50 hours
1 port lower around 75 hours
1 starboard lower around 100 hours

Damn, and your not putting the stress on the motors like a 28 Skater will. Have you talked to other center console owners with 300xs? Is this a Mercury Quality cotroll issue or what??

marylandmark 08-19-2009 10:18 AM

At 1st I thought it was my "magic throttle arm" but I'm not so sure about that any more...

There was a lot of prop and motor height trial and error when I first got the boat so that may have some thing to do with it I'm guessing. I haven't blown the same part twice since I got it set up right but without a doubt added the extra 2 year extended warranty ($6600 2 years for both motors).

Is it a Mercury warranty ? Did not know they extended out two years further.I had been told 1 year for 4k for both motors. Who do I talk to about a 2 yr for $6600 warranty ??

My turning issues are below 30 as the boat almost feels like it wants to roll. I have experienced an opposite lean on an Awesome cat before but my 28 feels a tad different almost like the boat is spinning out. I have to counter steer the whole time. However, about 70 the boat is fine...just a weird sensation as I am quite sure the boats not going to roll or spin out at 30.
