I was with some buddies on the Delaware river last week. We were trying to make the best of the nice weather with the mix of outboards including Chris with his 24ft Skater. They captured some video.
On a 27-28' boat the promaxes are desirable for a couple of reasons.
1. I love not having to mix oil (verses 2.5)
2. I love the torque and being able to run over 100 @ 6000rpm
3. The 300 promax is probably the most reliable of the 300+/- hp Mercs because of the lower rpm, the lower compression. (requires less octane than the 300x)
4. I'm @ 500 hrs (5 times the safe usable 2.5 lifespan) and still bust 100 with 150 gallons of gas and 4 peeps. I have no intentions of tearing them down or modifying them and reducing their reliability.
If I was to try and get a little more out of my max's, I'd probably just modify the rev limiter and let them turn 64/6500.
Our 28 "Tunnel Vision" (name take off from our race boats named "Double Vision") originally had 300 Pro Max Motors, it ran amazing @ 105 or so, we then put 300 X motors on. It ran even more amazing @ 112-115 , just lit the boat up. Our 32 also named Tunnel Vision had a pair off 300X on it, that boat ran around 106 constantly and somewhat faster low on fuel etc. amazing boat and beautifully balanced, it felt like it would run through anything, and it did. the 1000 higher RPM was what we needed. although the 300X motors used crazy amounts of fuel and tended to break things, many powerbeads, and I mean many, and a few gear cases. still the best pleasure cat imaginable.

I agree, The 300x is the best motor for that size cat. As you can see I am partial to them as well. I would not trade them for the 300r nor the 400r. Now maybe a 450R LOL!
