Agreed, there's a huge difference in tunnel depth so it would make sense that the Skater is much better in the rough. With that said, the DW's have absolutely cleaned house on the race course, and a lot of those races are in some pretty snotty water!
|
yep the DW's do own the race courses, but though I have never raced or run real rough water either, running for pleasure vs running to win I'm sure I would sacrifice ride for the win LOL. you can get an honest apples to apples answer from Ryan I bet.
|
I don't have a vested interest, but I would certainly be interested in hearing Ryan's take on this topic. I'm a big fan of both boats.
And getting back to the OP, I'm still interested in why the step away from the 32 Spectre, which I think is an awesome cat as well. In fact, I'd would put it right up there with most of the boats we are taking about here... |
mlb75, is that your spectra OB in the classifieds ?
|
The boat is gone, long story that isn't worth getting into here. I loved the boat but since it's gone and I'll be back in the market I just want to explore all the options before I make my next purchase.
If theres a nice 32 Specte available when I'm ready to buy I'll definitely look at it, I loved mine but I'd prefer a non Frisini built one. IMHO they just didn't know **** about rigging the boats, having been through it I know what to look for and what would probably need to be fixed but don't feel like doing it all again on one of their boats. When I lost my boat it was perfect but only after putting a ton of time in fixing the crap Frisini half assed. For a few examples when I got it they had power backfeeding between the trim motors because they never put the diodes on the combined trim switch on the thottles, I had another electrical deamon / draw that required I completely rewire the dash and switch panel to get straight, the battery cables were the wrong gauge for the length of runs, they had more wire spliced to wire spliced to wire in a run than I could count, including both + and - battery cable runs, no chaffe protection for fuel lines that went through bulkheads, etc etc. None of it was difficult to fix just shouldn't of had to do it with a new boat. I did it all and like I said I was VERY happy with it and it ran great in smooth and ROUGH water, just ask those that have run with me, but I have a bad taste in my mouth with looking at another one of their products unless the price really reflected it. The reason for the interest in the skaters is the 28 is so darn fast when set up right and the 32 skater is a little bigger boat. Both lack the windshield and styling of the Spectre but I'm not afraid to cut into something if the deal is right. One of my best friends had a 32 with trip 2.4's that we did. We redid the dash to make a double bouble dash and cut the back down to make it more of a fastback like the 28, couple little changes made a huge difference, if we would have put a wrap around windshield on it or flat decked it (was in the works before he sold it) it would have been a nasty boat. When I bought the Specte I got a great deal on it and the wife loved it too which always makes it easier, now were back in the market and she's still up for another cat so like I said just trying to weigh all the options that are out there. If I end up with a ready to go boat great I can't wait to be back on the water hauling butt at the next poker run but if I find the right deal on something that IMHO needs a little TLC I'm also OK with that, I'll make it my own and be ready for next season and in the mean time continue to bum rides for this season. Have beer and gas money if anyone has an open seat :) |
No that's not mine it is a pretty boat though.

|
They could be sitting up in the picture as well. I did that on a regular occasion when running sat on my knees in the seat and looked out over the windshield. I did it much more when running in a crowd or tight spaces since it "felt" like I had better vision all around me then when sitting down. Just seemed more natural to be sitting up and lookin gout with head on a swivel when things could get interesting. When we were just cruising around it was butt in the seat, radio jamming, loving life.

All the others just don't have the interior style that I like but are such SOLID platforms to start with. I may VERY well end up with another Spectre who knows just like to keep the options open, get more information on pros and cons of each, and play with ideas unitl the time comes. |
.
what's the company name that made this masterpiece? where is this shop located? . |
Just me and a couple friends, we're in the Virginia Beach area. Really sucks he ended up selling it after we got it that far before we really got to play with it much.
Thank you for the compliment though. |
.
did the boat previously have canopies? I'm seeing two bumps on the dash is why I'm asking |
No just a standard square flat dash, we moved the steering to the port and redid the entire layout for the more fluid look. The center portion was setup to be a step up and over the dash to the bow. If we did it again we'd bring the hoods over the pods a little farther back and probably make the center portion a little bigger to put in a flat screen instead of the gauges. That was actually the first time we'd worked with carbon fiber, we were pretty happy with how it turned out.

I can't seem to visualize this. can you draw it? . |

That's the best picture I can find ATM, that was when we were cutting out some of the extra race bracing to make it more comfortable but you can see the original dash as well. The boat was an ex race boat, like so many were, and was apparently rigged with quads at one time before my buddy had it. That must have been one kick a$$ ride. |
I have the 32 Spectre for sale in the classifieds. It has been a great boat and a lot of fun. We have 340 hours of trouble free boating. Mine was built in Jay's factory before frishini moved everything to the east coast. I have had zero issues. I don't think we will ever go back to a V bottom. I would like to try an i/o boat. If I have to start replacing drives and putting a ton of money into an i/o I'm sure I will go back to a cat o/b.

What's your top end on that boat? . |
TM you do have a beautiful boat, for others it was actually him that helped me get the setup right on mine. There is definitely a difference in a boat Jay was involved with and a Frisini only one. If yours is still available when I'm ready I'll be giving you a call. If I recall correctly yours will run 103 pretty much everyday and on a good day will be in the 105 range right.

Sweet 32 TM!

Hey Bob, Eric is a good friend of mine and we run a lot of the runs together. He is running 15x32 BBlades Bravo's. On his boat they run really well. At one point in time a few summers ago we did bolt up a set of 4 labbed merc 4 blade Cleavers and a Set of 5 Blade dewalds and tried them but they ran the same as his Bravo's. For that boat the bravo's are hard to beat.

If you never have run clevers what are you running? i have heard nothing but good things about the dewalts and blasters from BBlades. I picked up a couple of Ron Hill 4 blade bravo style over the hub vented props from a friend for a steal. I don't like them for anything other than running in rough as they bite great. The over the hub design seems to lift the stern spining out and burys it spinning in. I also lost mph with the Bravo design. With 15x30 labbed clever Spinellis I'm bumping 100. I nedd 15x34 clevers to bust 100.

The Talon Guy I ran 4 blade lab finished 32"x14.75 Merc cleavers on my 28 and hit 110 consistently with fuel and three buddies in the boat. They were very good props. I have BBlade 32" bravos on the 30 and it takes a few seconds to hook up and top end is not were it should be. Mid range is decent but it is likely 300XS vs 300X issue. I'm waiting on Dewald to finish up tooling and plan to try his in the mean time I ordered another set of MercNs as they were good work horses. I may sell them if I like the Dewalds. Skater Guy |
Well I've made up my mind and it looks like I'm seriously in the market for a 32 cat. If you've got something or know of something that's not listed please let me know. I'd prefer a B Skater but would also entertain A hulls or a DW. On a Skater I'd prefer trips but wouldn't rule out twins, on a DW I think they're all twins but let me know what's out there.
