You guys are all killing me with this 30/308/318/338 name game! They all measure the same exact 30' 8" from tip of the sponson to back of the transom out of the mold. When Pete was tooling the plug back in 2004, he told Rik he was coming out with a new model - the Skater 30. I got hull #1, and it is listed by Douglas Marine as a Skater 30, even though it measures 33' loa with the tunnel/deck/hullside extensions (as do a few other inboard 30 Skaters with extensions). Right around the time the 30 came out, Pete came out with the 368 Skater (which references a 36' Skater widened 8") and a few years later the 388 Skater (which is a 36' Skater lengthened 2' and widened 8" - hence the 388). All of a sudden guys started calling their 30 Skaters 308s (these were not 30' Skaters widened 8"). Then guys built 10" widened 30s with tunnel/deck/hullside extensions and called them 338s. Now Steve's is a 10" widened 30 with no tunnel/deck/hullside extensions and it's called a 318. Can somebody please explain the logic of all these different numbers, because I'm lost.

Hey Pre, Thats my boat. I get to be the prototype. Kinda cool. The guy who is writing the article called me this afternoon. Think he is going to come to my place at Toms River for the last part of the article. Go out for a ride. I think the name was more of combining the old 308 number with the 10 inch widening of the tunnel for 318. It does have a foot longer running surface than the 308 as they didn't notch the hull at the stern so it does still make sense that way. Maybe I misunderstood it the way I wanted it to be. Steve

Matt is a cool dude, he's a friend of mine. Lives out here by me in Nor Cal

And don't forget the 328 widened 8" and the one 3212 widened 12". I guess after that the numbers just went out of control and were sometimes up to whatever the customer wanted it called to be different. And of course the bases of the numbers and how they were come up with became completely random. Don't forget the 412, the 40 widened 12". To me that should have been called the 4012. Also some of these 50s, 52s are just 46s with bussels. But when someone builds a 388 with a bussel/tunnel extension, they don't want to call it anything other than a 388. Who knows. Lol it's all good.

just to get a clear picture in my head, if that's even possible, I'm going to measure my notch (get your minds out the gutter guys :D)..are there any other changes to the bottom that you're aware of nasty???? step placement, depth etc???

If I had a 28 that measured 28'1", could I then call it 28-1, or would I have to call it 281 ? How about 28.1, or 28 1/12.

Anyway, Craig said notch.....

Hey LA, My understanding was they took the 308 name used frequently and the fact that it was widened 10 inches and combined the numbers for 318. Could have been a 310 or 3010. The 1 in 318 is not so much for the removal of the notch in the hull at the stern being one foot. Im not even sure how long the notch is. The name is not consistent with the past set ups they used. I liked it better than the other ones. It wasn't up to me in the end any way. Not aware of any other changes in the hull/bottom of boat. Steve.

Hey Free, Just curious how the performance of your 28 was effected when you added the windshield. Did it handle different. What happened to the top speed. What was it before and after. Steve.

LAriverratt 03-03-2015 01:20 PM

just to get a little more confusing...I thought that the 308 came from 30'8" running surface??? you added 10" to the tunnel width (center number) so there ya go, 318 skater LOL

and no flight,,,I have a 28 that is #1 hull and its called 28-1...you have the 320sh!t...but I would be glad for you to have the 28-1 if ya realy want it :D
