outboard skaters: 28 versus a 32

What are the main differences between a 28 and 32 skater with outboards? A lot of difference in ride, freeboard, handling, etc?

Thanks!

mlb75 07-20-2016 12:26 PM

Big difference in all three. A 28 is big and strong enough to run in anything you've got the balls to run in but a 32 will be much more comfortable as it gets rougher and passengers will feel much more in the boat. The 28 is faster with similar power obviously but a 32 will be more comfortable to run faster in. If you generally run on lakes or flat water get a 28 if the water gets rough you'll appreciate the 32. JMHO

Double Rigged 07-20-2016 02:01 PM

I agree with mlb, I have had a 28 and now a 308. Big difference in the two regarding quality of ride and rough water.

Gary P 07-20-2016 03:07 PM

We (me and my brother) run a 308 in Lake Erie and the Niagara River. It handles very well in rough water. I'd think a 28 would beat you up some, and the 32 would be super!

Zero Patience 07-20-2016 03:17 PM

32 would need trips or 400 r. Otherwise a slow ride

mlb75 07-21-2016 09:13 AM

To follow up on Zero's comment, a 32 with twin 300X's should run right at 100-101 with XS's it's 95 or so which isn't exactly slow but with trips it's 115 all day long with another 5-10 available with setup. So basically a 32 needs trips to run as fast as a 28 but with the trips you also get ridiculous acceleration and hole shot.

speicher lane 07-21-2016 10:07 AM

if you see a pic of a 28 tied up next to a 32' Skater, depending on the actual angle... you would be hard pressed not to think the 28 was next to a 36.

32 definitely a bigger heftier hull than a 28. Both ride nice but the 28 is the speed demon of the two for get up and go, that said many of the 32A's rigged with trips easily topped 110+ but the center gear case took a beating

TubeCarz 07-22-2016 07:30 AM

I saw a video that depicted this very thing , must have been weeks ago now . :picard1:
Ohh well , cant remember where I saw it , but it's nice to see some of you remember the lesson .

Zero Patience 07-22-2016 04:25 PM

Lesson, my a$$, simple math you can do.

TubeCarz 07-22-2016 04:59 PM

Mr. Zero ,
Funny you guys didn't mention math , physics , earth rotation or gravity when the video was posted . Only that I was an idiot for making you watch a Skater get whooped ;)
When the point was that a hull that size ( no matter the mfg ) really need's three mules tied to the back .

Today you say >

See it was a compliment on your memory retention . No need to be so self conscious :party-smiley-004:

Baca baca, blah blah blah.

zooma - zooma - fa - fa - fa :cheer:

I think you are giving a single 400 way too much credit :picard1:

Why hasn't this TubeAss Troll been Banned!

TubeCarz 07-25-2016 04:37 AM

Every word I have ever said here, has been the truth. Never disrespected anyone. Or called them names.
Stevie, if I hurt your feelings, go see your doctor instead of going all Nazi / commie.

Orthobam 07-25-2016 06:33 AM

No need to ban a guy for his opinions. Tube, we get it you don't like Skaters and you think they are junk. Ok. Point made.

We all happen to love our Skaters and respect the man who still builds them today. Your comments aren't going to change that.

It's like telling a Harley guy he should buy a Honda. Not going to happen. At this point you are just stirring the pot.

Summary,
TubeCarz does not like Skaters and thinks they are junk.

Every other Skater owner on this forum loves their Skater(s) and respects the man who builds them.

If anyone would like TubeCarz opinion please PM him and I'm sure he would be happy to give you his expert advice on catamarans, outboards, set ups, lay ups, building boats, windshields, fuel tanks, fuel, props, drives, speed of different catamarans, build quality of different brands......

Skater is the only brand catamaran I will ever own (unless I inherit one - but then I'd sell it) and no internet forum is going to change my mind.

mlb75 07-25-2016 08:36 AM

While we're on the subject of the video, no one in that video got "whooped" it was a couple friends boating together and taking video of each others boats while having fun. If you've never done that with a friend either you have no friends or your missing out on a fun part of performance boating, I'm guessing most of us know which category you probably fit in. Now at the same time can a smaller boat with trips outrun a bigger boat with twins sure no big surprise there. Now if those two boats were running together and the water kicked up I'd put my money on the twin powered bigger boat all day long and now that they both have trips my bet would be on the skater even though it's a bigger boat.

Ortho,
Glad to see there is someone here with at least a bit of an open mind. I respect your opinion as well as your sense of humor.
I looked into buying a Skater, used of course. What I found was "Skater Brothers" looking to off boats that needed tanks done who swore they were fine, yet weren't willing to remove the inspection cover. Other's had a snap in carpet with a big Skater logo. While the color matched carpet looked nice, it seem's they did a good job of hiding the seams where the floor had cut out. In both cases everyone seems to think they are worth all the money. And from reading here, it seems that they all need to be done more than once, no matter who does it. You guys said it over and over, not me.
I asked how many of you were willing to take your fresh from Peter tank jobs to a Sunoco station and fill it up with 93 . Silence by most and the few calling me an ******* trouble maker spoke volumes about the level of trust you guys put in the tanks in general or the repair that you spent a lot of money (to me anyway) on to fix a problem that could have been dealt with long ago with bladders or aluminum tanks.
If you guys want to be tied to rec 90 fuel OK, just don't go bad mouthing other boats with false statement's, lay-up schedules, build quality etc if you don't want your own words fed back at you.

mlk,
Nope never been boating with friends my whole sheltered life. To my untrained eye, one boat seemed quite a bit faster than the other. Wasn't the point, go back and read what Zero said maybe you'll remove the wall and let it soak in, but even then, probably not.
Being open minded, I'll go with you on your tangent.
Out in the rough 4-6 / 8-10 the girls would have said take me home NOW . From there it would be up to the man on the throttles as to who wins the 40-50 mph race. And I'll bet 99.9% of the guys on this forum turn around and go in when it gets so rough you cant see the tower of a Rybovich between swells.
And since you went down the path of if my aunt was my uncle. Since they were already on the Florida bay side what if they went N-NW into Flamingo for some flat's fishing instead of running to the Islamorata bridge.
Which boat would get stuck first ?

bobby, it's called debating not baiting. So sad you show an inability to discuss facts and discourage others from doing so as well.

Tube, Just for clarification my 308 has had 93 octane pump gas in it since day one in 2007. I have inspected the tanks since I bought it and they are perfect built with the material that Peter said it would last. I will continue to put pump gas 93 in with no worries in the world. If and when something happens it is part of owning a high performance boat. Us boaters can find faults with all makes and models of boats as well as engines.
Maybe we should run Tahatsu outboards because Mercury cannot build a 3.0l gear case that can stay together or not ingest water. Just my .02 cents.
Lastly some of the guys that buy these boats have no business owning them as they cannot afford the proper way to do things. If you see seems in the floor I would bet the tanks were done somewhere other than Skater. I was Zero last weekend and saw his boat. There is no evidence of the floor ever being cut.
Being in the marine business I see a lot of things from other manufactures as well but do not share them. All builders have there issues. They are just not public knowledge.
Carry on!

You never mentioned that your's were fine before. Nor did you say that you ran 93 before this. If I were you I would consider myself lucky since boats before, same year and later models have all had problems. And according to the owners, Peter told them their's were fine too.
Kind of hard to fathom looking at spending thousands on putting new tanks in as normal maintenance on a performance boat. If that's your level of acceptance, OK
You guys seem to pride yourself on knowing where every single Skater ever built is located. Then honestly, what percentage of them have been back for tanks ?
I'll say in advance, No wonder they have gotten good at hiding the repair.
I hate to tell you , the smaller Merc's are made in the land of the rising sun. And no, they don't need seal kits for the shift and drive shafts.
Yes, there is a lot of junk out there. We as American's should be ashamed of ourself's for building, buying and supporting those who continue to put it out.

Bobby, let me help you out here. I said :

Stevie, if I hurt your feelings, go see your doctor instead of going all Nazi / commie.

If you look you will see I did call him "Stevie"

I never said he was a Nazi or a commie , only that he was acting like one.

I didn't take it personal, I saw it for what it was and made a suggestion on how to deal with it. IE to see his doctor.

How nice of you to notice that I am a sport. A good sport indeed.

Here is a gift for you that should not only bump you from your Jr. High reading and comprehension level. But also might help you come up with your own material instead of copying mine.

You know there is another loyal following there as well in the General Section. Or are you scared of the big boys?????????

Dayum! I'm sensing some major butt-hurt up in here.

No offense intended, but which one of you Skater Bros got caught throwing the wood to Mrs Tubecarz?

I know Tubecarz was a pain in the ass, but deleting his posts, and his threads, and his account is a little harsh.

LAriverratt 08-01-2016 11:33 AM

I don't care for that kinda move either...I can be a pain too, just ask my wife :picard1::lolhit:

Double Rigged 08-01-2016 02:24 PM

There is a difference in being a pain and being a bad person. It is bad business to bash others or companies regardless of your situation.
He had nothing constructive to offer IMO other than bad things. If he at least would have owned a boat at sometime with proof of what someone did to him then maybe let him rant. I do not respect guys like him.

We all share constructive things that everyone benefits from for the good of the brand.
I can tell you all being on the inside of the industry all builders/engine builders etc have their issues. It would be easy to sit on a keyboard and start bashing them.
Just my .02 cents.

When you come on the "Skater" forum to bash Skater your issues have issues. You can dislike something but "I" don't want your opinion on the matter unless I ask. He was/is a Douche.
