28 Skater w/ 250XSs - 107mph 1st day out

I sold my 28 to a friend of mine that put brand new, completely stock 250XS powerheads on it. The first day out, with the same 35" pitch Dewalds I was running with my DBR modded 300XSs it ran 107mph with 60 gallons of fuel, two guys in it and 95 degree heat. The motors only had 2.5 hours on them, and were only spinning 5,600rpm with the tall props on it. I bet I'll get this combination to run low teens once it's fully out of the break-in mode and I have Dave tweak the props to get some more rpm. Pretty cool to have 5 years of warranty and still have a 28 that will run teens.......

Dale your buddy got a really nice 28 that I am sure is light!!!!
Couple of people I have spoken with in the mother Mercury circle claim those motors can have as much as around 270hp. Back in the day when the 300xs's came out on the CC's down here they were not much faster than the 250's.
Great motors too

That's pretty wild.

I might have the props he needs. I would be interested in trading for the 35's.

14.5 x 33 Dewalds. Like new. Call Dave to confirm.

Dewald numbers (06162) I would rate them 9 of 10. Very close to perfect. Shoot me a message if interested. I'm not interested in selling these, but would consider trading for the larger wheels.

Congrats to the new owner of Razors 28.

I was under the understanding the Dave Dewald's "fast" props for Skaters are cleavers. How did you end up with choppers? and how did they perform? did you compare them to the same pitch cleavers? Just curious..

When I replaced my broken 300xs powerhead (under warranty), Mercury only gave me one year on it. Will Mercury really give 5 years on a replacement 250xs powerhead??

Yes Ron, I've heard the same 270hp figure from a few guys. I figured it was going to still run well with the 250s on it.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think Bryon is going to want to chance changing props. We put a small nick in the leading edge of one blade Sunday, so I'm going to send them back to Dave for the repair and have him pull some trailing edge cup out of them to get us some more rpm. The 35s are the best props I've ever run on the boat (I've tried 4 different sets of Dewalds), and he only needs a few hundred rpm to be close to where he should be. I'm certain he's willing to give up a little acceleration for the higher cruise speed of the taller pitch. If the motors can see 5,800-6,000 best, and 5,600-5,800 with a load and heat, they're well within the correct rpm range for those motors. I only spun them 6,100 best with my 300s, and they were the fastest props I ever ran by a solid 2mph. I don't think they will ever be the "perfect" set of props for the 250XSs, but should work very well with some cup taken out.

Hey David, he bought a pair of brand new 250XSs to get that warranty. The dealer he bought them from - my buddies at Boatmasters - are going to sell off all the remaining parts. It's a long story how this all came about, but he bought another 28 before I decided to sell mine, blew a powerhead the first day out, ordered the new 250XSs for it, then I sold him my 28, he sold the 28 he had bought w/ my 3.2 powerheads, and put the new 3.0/250 powerheads on my 28. That's the quick version of how my 28 got 3.0/250 powerheads after he bought it!
