1989 Skater 24
I have always wanted a 24' Skater as I love boating on Lakes, Rivers and Open water. Earlier this year I had the fortune to buying one and it took a while after trailer repairs to get it to my shop in South Carolina from where it was found in Texas. I will attach the photos I have and would love any & all feedback of it's history as well as suggestions for restoration. My intention is to clean it up first, then remove outdated parts while inspecting everything for integrity. So far all the rigging is original to 1989 and intact. I have two 250XS motors with all the 14-pin harnesses and VesselView Race Edition ready to go. So it is my intention to update as I go along but would again, love any & all feedback!

Well this weekend I finally got started on the cleaning... here are a few pics to update this thread.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7e3fbd7f5c.jpg I am not sure that I will be keeping these pumps... seems a bit unnecessary with the VST on the 250XS. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d552e7ff08.jpg Time to add new filters and water separators. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1d213bd85a.jpg With the Holley Blue pumps pressurizing these header tanks, I will most likely not run bulbs. Any thoughts on this? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...85cafe2f31.jpg All the grime that was in the hull was oil-field drill bit manufacturing dust. This boat sat in a warehouse uncovered for a decade. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...3e659e7b44.jpg The Hynautic reservoir still has residual pressure. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7fe5747922.jpg Is there a reason why the Port shifter is reversed? Did the CLE and Sporty cases run reversed? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b67cbef631.jpg I have no idea how someone decided this space was for two Group 24 batteries... it was a BEYOTCH getting them out. All but one fastener played well to come out. I stripped the head of the screw, so now it will get drilled. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a8eb31a1e3.jpg Time to wipe it down... |

A few hours and I will have all this silicon removed and the stainless plates repolished. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c50b495cc6.jpg All four stainless plates are off... now I will get to cleaning the transom https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...69ba81b546.jpg Can someone show me a few pics of how this is mounted to the Single Ram offshore cylinder..? This is the first time I have seen one of these trim indicator mounts. |
boats cleaning up nicely
those gearcases have a different bearing carrier and other components in the left gearcase to be able to be ran in reverse to get a counter rotation so no they cannot be ran either way separate counter and clock gearcases,,, the indicator points upward when it is clamped to the offshore trim ram and slide hits the area at the upper ram pin,,,,so when ram extends or contracts it moves the indicator |

Day 2 Update
Here are a few pics and the link for my Skater 24 Restoration
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2311defa5c.jpg Working on the Gelcoat is difficult because it is so thin and very hard cured. This Skater has been sitting inside a warehouse for 28 years not exposed to the elements. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...51a4eabaff.jpg So far this is two stages of cutting the gelcoat with Maguire's compounds and cleaners. No wax has been used so far. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c56fe762bb.jpg I have begun the removal of all the fuel system components. I am wondering if I should keep the Holley Blue pumps and the Header tanks to feed fuel directly from there to the 300XS instead of needing a bulb. Comments?? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6bf32208b4.jpg I know I will not need the Weldon 2000-A pumps but does anyone think I should keep the Holley Blue pumps to utilize the header tanks? |
Wow, that't taken a while, but it is coming out really nicely.
As to the shifters, the cable moves in opposite directions on left and right Mercury engines. That is probably what you noticed three years ago. __PRESENT |
