Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
I just removed the dash panel on the passenger side of my 31ss and found that there's a lot of room in there and already partially carpeted. Figure if I close off the left side that is open to the water tank and put a glove box or hatch on the dash panel, there's extra storage to be had. Anyone ever do this? What type of entry door did you use? I'm going to go with a 3/8" thick white plastic panel and use the same when I redo the dash, basically same material as the cabin door.
Also, the grey carpet that Sonic uses in the storage compartments, where do you find it and what do you use to glue it in place? |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
East Coast,
I would use 3M spray adhesive to secure the carpet. I will be at Sonic on Monday to do the final inspection of our new boat. I will ask them about the carpet. Tom |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
NJSonic... I'd appreciate that! They don't seem to be good at getting back to people. If I could ask one more favor while your down there... Could you get the color and manufacturer name of the gel coat used on a 94 31ss? I'm going to be taking it in for gel work and they said they need to know this information to match it properly.
Appreciate your time! |

im sure when njsonic is there.all the will tell them it's a standard white even though there are many whites.last year i needed some for repair of my 91 sonic and they stated it was standard white. i asked if they could ship me a gallon they said law prohibits them from shipping gel coat.make a long story short i contacted a friend that works in lauderdale and asked him to go get me a gallon at the factory he did better than that and got me two. you can have the one left over i don't know how good it is but its been in the refrig for a year. its yours just pm me your address i can ship it ups very carefully. paul |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
Sonic28, Thanks for your offer! Is there a shelf life date on the can by any chance?

Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
i have no idea they pour it out of a 55 gallon drum.also note my fiberglass guy told me after all i went trew to get the gel coat .that he still had to tint it to match. so if you have a good guy he should be able to use any white gelcoat and tint it.the fact is white does fade even after one year.let me know if you want the gel .
good luck paul |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
The gel coat that they used on our 2001 358 was Lilly White.
I will get the correct color for you. Tom |

I hope Bruce was helpful today. I gave him your requests and I know Ann gave him the extra requests. Tom |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
Thanks NJSonic! Bruce was extremely helpful! I called down specifically for info on if these boats HAVE waste holding tanks or not. Heard that they put them in all the boats, even if they weren't installing pump outs. Well, according to Bruce, after a certain year, this is true, however on the 94, it isn't. Anyway, after talking with Bruce about the issue, he stated that they have tanks fabricated for retrofits on the 31! So I put my order in and tapped him for a few more questions!
Heading to the Kent Island boat show on Sunday, hoping to look at some of the sonic rigging for ideas. Already hooked up a deal with a frig dealer to buy their display model at the end of the show. Going with the recessed model, will have to open up the cutout just a fraction more to fit it in. Got the passenger dash in the works, just have to figure out what kind of access panel/door to use, want to put in a power outlet or two for the cell phone and spot light. Looking at the main dash, that sure will be fun replacing that one. That will be a winter project along with the gelcoat work. |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
Glad to be of help. I'll be back down at Sonic to pick our boat up on May 16th. :evilb: If you need anything else. Let me know.

Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
A quick question. If you were going to make final inspection of your boat why are you going back in May? Did you inspect your boat? What condition was it in? Did it have a hull number in it yet? When was it origionally due?
ANd PS.... Lilly no longer exists. They were bought by Valspar. they do clam to make the same color but it depends who does your mix there IS a noticable difference in color between the Valspar Ultra White and the old LIlly Ultra white. Just be very clear with whoever is doing your mixing. |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
Catagory5(JIM),
The boat is done, and has been done for a while. Mindi Doller's crew was dialing it in.They did a great job rigging the boat. I flew down to check it out one last time. I will be driving down to trailer it back up in May.Yes the boat was delayed but it was NOT Sonics fault. It was the engine builders suppliers fault-couldn't get the heads. Then the custom CMI headers had to be made to the replacement heads. They couldn't get the Dart heads and they used Brodix heads instead. Both of these issues were out of Sonics hands. Tom PS. Jim if you want to talk call me. I'm sure Dennis has my number,or get it from Adam L. or Mike (2001 358). |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
Tom,
I realized it was you after i posted, i think it was 1am. I'm not officially with Dennis anymore, I still help him out n the performance stuff. I opened my own shop. I'm in the same marina as Adam. |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
East Coast, I posted a question similar to yours 2 years ago about a glove box on the passenger dash panel idea. It seems like there is enough room to put in some type of glove box. I like your idea of the 12 volt outlets for a cell phone ect. Let us know how it turns out! Steve

Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
509, will do. I pulled the panel and there is a lot of room in there. It's already carpeted and contains some wiring and an electrical bus. I'm going to mount 1-2 12v power outlets in there on the back panel. One for the cell phone and maybe one for the spotlight. The only side that isn't carpeted is the left side which is open to the fresh water tank. I'm going to stuff that closed and hopefully find some matching carpet to finish it off. I have a sheet of the 3/8" white plastic for the face plate and I just ordered a tempress 11x15 white slam hatch yesterday. It's about the best thing we came up with to use for an access panel, we'll see how it turns out. Dammed little hatch was about 60 bucks with shipping and tax. I'm hoping to have it in place by next week. I'll take some pics, though I can't post them. If someone gives me their email address, I'll send the pics for you to post..
Also got a section of the 3/8 plastic for the driver dash panel which I'll do in the winter, all that wiring will be fun!!! Going to stay straight white panel and try to find blue bezels or white, we'll see what comes up! Picked up our frig at the boat show yesterday, they have to send me the mounting bracket for installation. Waiting on Sonic to get back to me with delivery of the custom waste tank to start the electric head installation. Want to get that delivered and installed before I order the jabsco quiet flush... Picked up a gps/depth finder combo as well at the show... Bring on summer and lower gas prices!!! |

Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
I love Raystown Lake!!! Don't tell anyone about it
|
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
It's so far away from anywhere, people don't tend to come back that often. And you can't build on it, so that's another issue as far as availability.

Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
East Coast B,
I'll be glad to bring your waste tank north with me if you want to wait till May when I pick up our boat. I'm in west central New Jersey (10 miles north of Princeton). Let me know. Tom |
Re: Anyone ever made a glove box out of the passenger dash panel?
Thanks for the offer NJSonic! I'll keep that in mind. They last told me they didn't have any in stock and were checking into when they would come available. Thanks again for the offer, I appreciate it!
