Come on now don't leave us hanging. What's it look like and how much???? :D

Well, here is the short of a very long story. We just bought the 2003 42 w/575's that most of you probably looked at on E-bay late in '06. Couldn't pass, got what we paid for our boat after 2 years and gave 170K for the 42. The boat is a 10 in every aspect except...71 gps @ 2200 ft. That is a 10 mph drop from the previous ride and all my buddies run in the low-mid 80's. My wife, of course, is in love with it. Cuddy quite frankly dominates over anything else we've ever seen. It was pulling 7 freaking pounds of boost with 4" pulley's. Everything I've read say's 4lbs is stock. It was turning 5100 with 28's. Slip seems a little out hand. I kinda want/need to go at least 77-78 so I'm not ringing it's neck trying to cruise with the boys @ 50-55. Air temp was 47. Could that bring the boost up that much? Anyway now I want to trade/sell it and get something with a decent cuddy and better performance. The wife is not thrilled but understanding. We don't need this Caddy ride w/ 25 degree V. If the lake see's 3 footers everbody goes crazy. Somebody tell me to grow up, slow down and enjoy this fantastic boat.

There is something wrong!!!There is no way possible the boat will only run 71:confused: My 386 runs 85gps on flat, flat water(trip 500's),a friend has a 42 that runs 75 with twin 500's...this is insane... I can't wait to hear some other replies...the boat looks great and I love the separated seating, unlike most 42's with the side by side. I'll trade u the 386 if u want to go fast:drink:

carrboy, you missed the elevation. Elevation, thins the air, reduces your HP and slows the boat down.
You might try a 37 Active Thunder or 386 Sonic with computer controlled Fuel Injection motors, like 525EFIs or 600SCIs. The computer will make sure that you get the most HP available based on elevation/air density. Both of these boats will have graciously appointed & roomy full cabins that the wife will like. I sold my 26' Sonic w/ 500EFI to a guy on a high elevation lake in Montana. I know he lost about 8mph over what I could get at sea level; but the computer tuned the boat better than he ever could. With his previous boat; with a carbed 454, he lost 15mph taking it to the higher lake; vs. sea level. |
Ahh,yes, totally missed the elevation at 2,500:eek: Selective reading again:rolleyes: How much u think the boat lost...like 10-12?

5100 with 28's should be in the high 70's....sounds like there might be some prop-slip involved. Pitch is pitch, and rpm is rpm, regardless of altitude. In any event, it's tough to get a 42 into the mid-80's. The 386 does so, alot easier. The 45 does it very nicely, too.

Sydwayz- Any 37's out there other than the one with 720's, that guy won't return my calls. If I hook on to her and head for Florida what is her approx. value if I want to tow something with a little more snort home? Or should I have Drew start building me some 557's and be done with it?

Forester,
The 42SS is a lush and MASSIVE behemoth, as you know. If you cruised the ocean, or maybe some long distance cruising where you spend 2-3 nights aboard, the 42 is worth the money and hassle. However, on a lake that at its worst sees 2-3 footers, and occasional overnighting; I think your wife will be very happy with a 37-38 foot boat with plush cabin such as the aforementioned brands. |
There is something more than elevation. 575's are computer controlled and are supposed to compensate, within reason, for altitude. His boost #'s would be low not high if it were just elevation. I would try different props.

Good to talk to you today Josh. The wheels are in motion.

Don't be surprised when Sonic dealers start going to the Active Thunder owners forum to recruit customers Brian. :eureka: Are you an OSO advertiser?

I am not an AT salesman, but I do help get folks where they want to be; ask On The Heat/Shawn about his Sunsation purchase. And also, AT advertising on OSO is in process. Thanks for keeping tabs on me. I need it; ask my GF. :D |
Sydwayz, I am doing what I want; collecting information from people with first hand experience so I can make an educated final selection for me and my family. Your time is well spent and appreciated. Speaking of education, is anyone running something other than the 28P with like HP in their 42. If I keep her I will be shooting for max cruising efficientcy in that 45-55 range.
|
we just built the engines for my 42 and should be running it tn the next coming weeks. I will let you know what it ends up running. Last year I was running 26's cruising around 45 to 50.
