wanted: sonic 386 1996-2000

with 2 or 3 motors... make offers !
i went to look at the one in freeport that is listed in the classifieds...

everything i am mentioning is my interpretation of what i saw..i am no expert but when i see something bad or broken, i can tell !

IT IS A DISASTER. god help the seller because he will need every possible help he can get..

the list of what is needs is huge..

the hull under has numerous nicks,chips.. there is a 15 ft scrape where it rubbed on something underneath...

there is lots of salt water corrosion.. EVERYWHERE...dirty EVERYWHERE,mold,dirt...sun burned pad,.. the pink strips are black burned..disgusting.

there are cracked doors, fridge is falling out...
the engine lid/seat is almost cracked in 2 where it becomes a bench..seems that the upholstery is soaked in water...vinyl is dirty and will be a great job to make white again.

every light socket in the cabin is pitted.. ! the chrome is pitted, rusty???

i flew there and wasted a day,a plane ticket.. he said the boat was like new.. numerous times..

the engine bay is full of corrosion on all metal fittings,parts..
the salt water hurt that boat.. claims to have new motors but there is rust on every hose,fitting,manifolds...the marina guy said the blocks were new 3 years ago...

definitely go see it in person b4 you buy it..

it was on ebay for 65k ... i bid up to 62k.
now that i saw it, wouldnt pay a penny over 55k. and even that is too much maybe.. i better stay away....

it is incredible for someone not to mention so much stuff that is bad about their boat... the description is very very very far from what the boat really is.
the seller needs to really reconsider his description and start accepting his boat needs lots of stuff to make it again into a real boat.

the stripes were redone but there is overspray everwhere...fumes...

i saw all that and that is with the shrink still on. imagine had it been off...what else would i see.

this is a 1998 boat that was not well kept and maintained...maybe mechnically maintained but 0$ invested into the boats appearance...

basically , i am so angry and unhappy i wasted a day at work for this boat....

again, the potential to make it nice is there...with lots of $$ and time and effort.

this boat is very far from being perfect...and i agree .. at that price, what else can u get ? but, still way too expensive in my book.

i think you won't be happy unless you buy something newer.

I have a nice 42 1997 Sonic. It has 500hp carb motors with 220hours on rebulds, Tri-axle trailer . The boat is in good shape and is a turn key boat.

Clean boats are out there, they just aren't cheap. Thanks for the compliment Mike. I forgot to call the broker, I'll do it tomorrow. Here is what a 10 year old boat should shine like:

after looking at both 38 ft sonic and fountain, and since i already have owned a fountain 35 1998, i decided to put a little more effort into the sonic 386- or 42 ft....
i like the hull and feel of a big boat ... but the fountain seems faster and has a better reputation but the sonic gives you the feel of a dodge viper henessy ! big, bad, beefy .....muscle ....
fountain is thin,light,low....

resale value is fountain...sonic seems to be harder to sell and bring less money when you want to unloas as there are less buyers for sonic.. demand and offer .... that is the key to value...check writers make the market, not n.a.d.a value guides...

mr. and mrs nada dont write checks.. they are the smartest of all.. the make money telling everyone how much it is supposed to be... and sometimes screw up deals and even good offers !

like someone mentioned above, i am looking for a deal on a nice boat. i will not settle for a decent of bad boat for cheaper... someone doesnt want to go through the process of the brokerage and wait 1 year to get paid, or someone has a new boat waiting... dont wait a year... i write the check now... ! same day.. no loan...

i sold a 575 m 2005 ferrari last week... worth 239000 cad. no one called for 3 months...
autoforum came up and offered 175000 with a check now...instead of brokerage.... i took the check and walked away !

but mr. and mrs. nada said it was worth 239000...thanks to them 3 months went by ! the true value of a car/boat is what you can get now when you want to unload... not in 6 months...

looking for the right buyer , at the right price almost never happens..as at some point, you always get that one guy who is fed up with waiting and decides to blow it out on ebay or on the classifieds ... and that one guys grabs that one only buyer out there at that time.. and again, another 6 months...

after 1 year, you're 20k below where you started ..you should have taken that check earlier !

just my thought on what trasnpires on the market of buyers and sellers...

i wish to be part of the sonic family....

a broker called offshore.......... here on oso has 2 boats i like..i sent him a pm to call me when he is free.

at 80 000$, the 42 on offshore only would be good....they are aksing for 98k
also the 386 1999 at 80 000$ .... they are asking 96k
both boats must have a trailer...at my offer...
they must be true FRESH WATER BOATS...no stories on the fresh water...
i tolerate normal wear....they are older boats... but still should be very nicely kept...

what do you think of my values on these 2 boats ?

carrboy 03-29-2007 08:38 AM

Where's the links for both boats...all I can do is give u my opinion...I just sold my 31 for 65k and ,like u said, nada screwed it up.I had it sold for 75k last year,I said no lower than 77k cause the book on it was around 90k.I lost 10k more and had to sit on it another year:mad: Good luck on the 386,I wouldn't let mine go for less than 120k
