GPS locations for 31 SS

Since there is very little room on the driver side of the dashboard, has anyone had any success with mounting a fixed GPS Unit on top of the dash so that a driver can see.

Sonic mounted my GPS unit on the passenger side of the dash and I am not able to see it. I've been looking at Handheld GPS units but would prefer to a fixed mount unit, but there is very little room and plus the windshield is in the way?

Help?

I have a 5 inch mounted up top between the compass and the hatch. The problem is you can not open hatch when GPS is there you can only open the door and duck in the cabin. It works well there and you can drill straight down for the power and antenna wires.

Remove your compass, and put a piece of Starboard there. Use this as a base to mount your pedestal mount GPS to, and fold the GPS down to put the cover on.

We have a friend that did exactly this on his 28, but I do not have pics. I should see him this weekend, and will try to get pics.

It works great, does not look terrible, and who uses a compass anymore anyhow when one has GPS?

I was able to rework the dash to locate a gps on the upper left. Easy to see and operate when running, however your limited to the smaller units. go to the below link and there is a pic of the dash..... I was also able to get two water pressure gauges in there as well.

I was thinking about taking out the compass but did not like the idea of how high it would be above the wind screen..Went out and bought a Garmin 440..Nice unit!!!Very compact.I was able to mount the unit between the compass and the hatch.I had to trim the mount but in the end it fits very nicely. In my opinion..Interesting thing is,After you locate it in the place I have it the compass will not work any how.The door on the unit where you insert the memory card has a magnetic on it, and it is so close to the compass it throws it way off..

It looks good!

I had my pedestal mount gps on the passenger side of my 31, angled slightly towards me so both driver and passenger could read it and no compass interference. Stuck up some but the cover did fit over it.

Would this slim line plotter work if you removed the compass and had your local boat repair or stereo shop build a small fiberglass box to sit between the dash and the windsheild? Wondering myself b/c the 31SS is the boat we are most interested in right now. The size of this unit is only 5.7"h X 9.9"w X 1.7"d.
