30 ss on Ebay

I just won an 88 sonic 30ss on ebay and it has 2 350fi motors but no props and idea what props I should go with

East Coast B 09-28-2009 05:45 AM

When you say 350FI, are you talking small block 5.7litre motors? 300hp. Do you have a link to the ebay ad?

30 ss

That Boat Use To Belong To A Guy In Erie Pa. I Believe It Had Alpha Ss Drives With Either 21 Or 23 Pitch Mirages. John M.

bigboat28 09-28-2009 12:23 PM

Andy congrats you beat me by 400$ stinks to be me. I talked to the guy who had it he said that he ran it with 21's and he thought that the 23's would be best. That is the guy you bought it from not the previous owner.

andyt25 09-28-2009 05:56 PM

yeah it came down to the last minute I've been looking for a Sonic for almost a year and that was the best deal I've seen so far, now I just have to make the 15hr drive to get it this weekend

GO4BROKE 09-28-2009 06:59 PM

Congratulations, post some pics when you have them.

I used to have a 1988 Sonic 30ss with with 350's.
The motors were the 320efi's with alpha ss drives spinning 21 mirage props. The drives were non counter rotating and with the 3 blade props and the higher X dimension I had some trouble getting on plane. Engine and drive package for that year ran extremely well. If you have the same drives I would look into getting the counter rotating gear set for the starboard drive.
Enjoy your boat, I had fun with mine for 9 years.

andyt25 09-29-2009 06:26 AM

yeah the one that I bought looks identical to the one in your pic
except for the writing, I don't if the drives are counter rotating or not

bigboat28 09-29-2009 11:14 AM

Good luck, hopefully it is as nice as the guy said it was. Let us know.

boomer 09-29-2009 01:15 PM

The engine package is rare it was only offered one or two years it the 350 with the EFI and Alpha combination. The motors if orginal are 350 4 bolt motors 300 hp. The Alpha drives are at there limit at 300 hp. Good Luck they are great boats.

andyt25 09-29-2009 08:28 PM

yeah this is the only one that I had seen with the 350 set up, it looks all original and only has 475hrs and for 15 grand I couldn't pass it up

bigboat28 09-30-2009 01:39 PM

When are you picking it up and where do you boat?

andyt25 09-30-2009 08:59 PM

I'm picking it up sat and I boat in upstate NY on lake ontario

Sonic30ss 10-01-2009 04:04 PM

I've got the same boat only an '87
I did have trouble with one of the motors, could never get it to run right. I've spoken to many people and it seems like if they run well then leave them alone. My experience has taught me if they start acting up, put an intake, carb, and ignition on them, save yourself the headaches. The electronic parts are all gone.
Don't believe all the doom and gloom about the Alpha SS drives. I've only managed to break off a couple of teeth off a gear in 8 years of running them. I rebuilt them with the Merc HD gear set, run synth oil (change @ 10 hr), and a drive shower. Watch the holeshot starts and pull back on the sticks when flying the boat and you will be fine. The props I use are labbed Mirage 21p, dropped to 20.2 and cupped, it was a completely different boat after that.
Congrats and enjoy it's a great boat.
Let me know if I can help with any more questions

Top out at 63-65 with the props cut down and cupped.
You may see a few more MPH with the stock 21s but full of fuel and gear for a weekend, it will be a bear to get on plane.
I don't think you could turn a 23 to full rpm.

sonic28 10-04-2009 05:07 PM
