2007 31 Sonic Questions

Hey Guys:

I am looking at buying a "new leftover" 31 Sonic from a dealer. The boat has less than 15 hours on twin 496HO's and has never been titled or registered so comes with all new boat warranties. Is there anything in particular to the 31's or Sonics that I should beware of or looking out for when I do my inspection ? What props should be on the boat from the factory ? Other than going through all operations what should I be looking out for in a "new" boat that has sat in dealer inventory for 3 years ?

Thanks for your input !

Steve

Impellers, Water systems, hoses, oils changes, drive fluid changes, ect.... we love ours. It crushes the water and handles great!!!

Have the dealer put fresh impellers on both motors as part of the deal.

45sonic 07-20-2010 05:36 PM

26 props I believe

Go over and run EVERY system onboard to make sure it functions before you take delivery. Lights, AC, blowers, head, seat actuators, hatch lift, you get the idea

This wouldn't be the red, white, and black (blue?) one from Offshore Performance would it???

MDsteve410 07-20-2010 05:59 PM

No it is the red, yellow, black and orange one at Unlimited Marine in KY. Any ideas on a good marine surveyor in KY ? Although new and under warranty maybe a good idea to get it surveyed.

Do you have a link on the Offshore Performance listing ?

FuelinAround 07-20-2010 07:00 PM

I'm in ky if I can be of any assistance

They took that boat on several poker runs trying to sell it in the past couple of years. Mine has the same power and 26 pitch props on it. Definitely have the impellers changed out.

I looked at that boat last fall and ran it on Lake Cumberland, it has a few more hours on it than advertised, I think it was about 34 or so. PM me if I can answer any questions. Steve

MDsteve410 07-20-2010 09:50 PM

They are advertising 15 hours, I do intend on getting a survey and have the hours, RPMs, alarms in the computer's verified along with all systems. Honestly the difference between 15 and 34 hours isn't that much unless they are all at 5100 RPM !

My 31SS w/HO's came with 26P props, but it was all over the rev limiter at only 72 MPH. I'm now running labbed 28P Bravos which are just right.

I haven't had any dealings on the sales end, but have had service work done at Unlimited. I would not be afraid to buy anything from them. They stand behind what they do. John takes great care of his customers.

You can have a Mercury dealer hook up the hand held computer to it and it will tell you the real hours. If the hours don't match, it's let's make a deal time.

That boat was sold a while back to a guy that lives near OC

I looked at that boat back in 07, just before Offshore Performance closed.

exmark31 07-22-2010 06:28 PM

Mine with Ho's in it won't turn over 5000 with 26 pitch props.

MDsteve410 07-23-2010 06:34 AM

So are you running 24's ?

exmark31 07-23-2010 03:54 PM

No still 26 getting about 74mph on gps at 5000 rpm

Sydwayz 07-24-2010 09:34 AM

We have the 31 Sonic that was built for the Miami Boat Show at the AT factory in storage. It's never been rigged, nor has the transom been cut. It's red and white, and has gauges cabin, and interior installed; just no power.

I can get you some numbers on finishing that boat if you are interested. Shoot me an email of so. The owners of AT and Sonic are very good friends; albeit completely different boats and companies.

Thanks Brian, I have already talked to Lollie about that boat and have numbers on it in hand.

Good deal. Let me know if I can help.

28p Bravo 1 props as Plum suggested. I have 28p stock bravo 1's and 28p Merc Racing labbed bravo 1's. It will run over 75 with 28's. I looked at this boat in 2007, very nice 31.

MDsteve410 07-26-2010 08:08 PM

How does the 31 handle big water ? I boat in the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean so not unusual to get caught in 3 - 4 footers ? Smooth ride in shorter chop (1') ?

Steve

teamsynergy 07-26-2010 08:18 PM

Awesome.... we get out in on lake michigan on a regular basis...cuts it very nice

I really trust my 31. I've been through some very snotty water with cruiser wakes converging from different directions and gotten it completely airborne a few times. It always lands gracefully and keeps running straight.

GO4BROKE 07-27-2010 08:47 PM

10x better than what you have. I went from a baja 272 to a 31SS. No comparison. I ran 65+ mph in the PRA a-bay run, in 5-6' swells near clayton. Boat is extremely stable and forgiving. Big water just makes it more interesting to drive.

GIDDY GIDDY GIDDY!!! I was running a little trimmed up just for fun but they just pass right on through the cuts. Plus we had 8 people in the back and 500 jello shots on board lol

No need to worry, the water over my head is from the wave I just punched thru, if you look at the side of the boat you can see the water still peeling off, 1 foot chop will just make it go faster you won't feel it , 3-4 you'll be having fun
