Fridge Issue

Having a problem with my fridge. Works fine while on shore power but once I disconnect it will not run off of the batteries. Anyone run into this problem?

Plum_Crazy 07-27-2010 09:25 AM

There might be a switch at the helm you need to turn on.

HiPerf2000 07-27-2010 09:54 AM

mine is on the "Galley Power" switch on the dash.

Quinny 07-27-2010 10:09 AM

I'll try it tonight with the "Galley Power" switch on & see what happens. Hopefully that does the trick. Thanks.

Sydwayz 07-27-2010 10:37 AM

There is often a fuse/circuit breaker on the back of the fridge itself. This may have tripped on you as well.

"Galley Power" Works for me too! :drink:

Quinny 07-29-2010 04:37 AM

Well the Galley Power does make it turn on, or at least some noise comes from the fridge for a minute then nothing. I pulled the fridge out. Fuse on back looked fine but going to replace to to eliminate that as a problem.

45SS 07-29-2010 09:21 AM

Plug up the shore power and turn on the battery charger, turn on the fridge overnight and see if it remains cold. This way you won't hurt the batteries.

last year I installed a brand new norcold db0751. It worked fine for 1 year. Now it only runs on a/c. I called Norcold and was told to take it one of their agents. They offered no repair advise. The fuses at the top and rear of the fridge are fine. I did'nt want this thread to die without solutions. I'll post mine when I have one.:party-smiley-004:

I went for a ride on the sonic with the captain last week... great ride!!! BUT, next time I'm definitely bringing my own cooler and beer because his f#/*ing fridge was STILL broke! :stupid:

captain caveman 09-28-2010 08:03 AM

picking up the fridge from Colton RV today. Supposedly there is nothing wrong with it. That would mean the problem is in the inverter and or wiring. It worked fine for a year after the initial install. Big water is the prime suspect now. Warm beer sucks.:party-smiley-004:

sloan135 09-28-2010 11:15 AM

I know that if my batteries don't have a good charge my fridge will not work on DC power. I had a hard time getting it to work until I changed my batteries. After I installed new batteries it has worked great.

GO4BROKE 09-28-2010 09:19 PM

Hey captian, did I see your boat at Erie Basin when I was there for the poker run?

I second the battery comment. I had 1 good and 1 bad. My stereo would cut out at high volume. Now I can go until I kill the speakers.

The wiring is pretty simple, shouldn't be hard.

captain caveman 09-29-2010 07:12 AM

yup, that was me. Both Erie Basin and Ray's boathouse. Battery power is not a problem (4 optimas under rear seat) my shore power is wired to 2000w inverter. This Sonic is a camper, 9 days in 1000 Islands. Problem might be loose wiring with all the pounding Lake Erie provides.:party-smiley-004:

Yup, and when the Captain's not camping in the Thousand Islands, here's where he ties off the boat back home... his slip is the open one to the right.

Slip looks kind of short...as far as he must stick out in the river. He must have to keep his nav. lights on at night so nobody runs him over...:drink:

You're right Upstate, his boat does stick out past the dock a little... but it's not really a problem in them there parts, because his neighbors all have smaller crafts and don't go out too much at night. Here's a pic of the guy who ties off in the slip just to the left of the Captain's slip... Besides, if any of them DO go out at night, they usually practice safe-boating and wear their night vision goggles...

Ok, I'm back at it again with the fridge. Suspect the inverter may be the problem. Where is the inverter located?? Took a quick look around tonight and didn't see it.

FuelinAround 02-06-2011 10:10 PM

I would like to know where the inverter is also? I pulled my fridge because of this issue and built a nice deep storage compartment there.I must admit I like having it more than the fridge

U4ICK 02-08-2011 12:08 PM

Need to pull the frig in my Prowler so let me get this straight. The frig power is 120 VAC. There is an inverter for converting 12 VDC to 120 VAC when off shore power. Is that right? If so, I too would like to know where the inverter is located.

The fridge accepts the dual power supply. No seperate inverter, its all in the fridge.

Most likely the ac/dc internal switch in the fridge has gone bad. I hadthe same issue and it was a $125ish part to replace excluding labor.

Hey Captain ~ Have you found any loose wires going to your fridge yet??? It's been a while since we've heard any updates from you... I hope you figure it out soon, because I don't want to go another summer on your boat with no cold beer!!!

I personally think that the whole issue started shortly after you wedged that oversize fridge in your cabin... You probably unintentionally crimped some wires together and caused a short when you shoved it in there last year... not to mention the extra weight of all that beer!

Well Chris, I have to say ..... I have only seen one (woman) on your boat!

So are you a closet wine cooler drinker as well? Hmmmmm

I understand when you buy a Sonic you are automatically enrolled in wine cooler anonymous ..... :lolhit: seems to me it should be therapy instead.

I can hear it now ..... " Hey Chris?".... "What's that Babe?"...."Watch out for the big wave .... don't want you to spill your wine cooler!" ..... "Thanks Babe!" "you are always thinking!" .....

Hey Captain ~ I don't seem to remember ANY fridge issues with your old 357 Formula that you traded-in on that Sonic. I recall runnin through the big stuff all day long in your 357 or my old 311 and still having cold beer on board (save for a few broken bottles) when we got back to the boathouse!

Maybe you Sonic boys should stick to the smaller rivers streams and tributaries, and avoid the "pounding" of the larger bodies of water like Lake Erie... Just trying to help! :lolhit:

GO4BROKE 05-29-2011 08:00 AM

Jeff aka Sausage King,
The one I bring is pretty good, no need for more. You should know she never would feel the need to point out a big wave we are about to crush.

Funny you mention a closet, and then perfect storm is trying to pull Caveman back to the Formula Alternative Lifestyle.:lolhit:

Notice the Coors Light in my stunt double's hand which came out of a cold Formula fridge.

Special thanks to the Sonic filming crew!
