Sonic cabin room specs?
In the market for a Sonic, can't believe it has taken me this long. The wifey got on my friends 31 ss and hated the cabin (go figure) my question is for the rest of the line up. I am 6' 1" she is 5' 3" and she could not stand in the 31ss. Nice boat tho :)
Is there a difference between a 358 and a 35ss? The 358 looks taller in pictures. Can either of us stand in the 35 sonic? What kind of speed on a 35 with 496ho, and 500efi? I really don't want to jump up to a 38 sonic, just because of the hassle of having a boat that size, however if the cabin of the 35 is low like the 31 I don't think I have a choice. And the deck room I am seeing in pictures of the 38 is very appealing, however just seems like a lot of boat and I don't think I want to go there. If anyone has a 35 in the CNY area we could see that would be great as well. |
Hea!! Great to see you last weekend up at the Pond..Had a great time!!
I just can not think of anyone that has a 35 in CNY..Was a guy out of syr that was a city cop but I have not seen him for years..he had efi500s in his.. Lots of 31s in the area as you know..Maybe Chris "GO4BROKE" knows of someone or I bet he would be willing to give a tour of his 38...then you will forget about looking for a 35 footer.. :drink: |
If I remember right the extended height came in the 353 vs the 35ss. I believe the headroom is exactly 6'1" also
|
The newer 31ss also has more headroom I believe

From what I am reading the 358 has the cabin of the 386 but the cockpit of the 26 prowler lol. The 31 cabin is not going to cut it, she can't even stand. Do you know if the 35ss has any headroom over the 31? |

35ss is slightly taller than the 31ss. The 358 has the same cabin as a 386. The 386 has a much larger cockpit and engine compartment. The 358 has basicly the same cockpit as a 31.
If cabin height is your priority, the 358 or larger is what you want. The only speedboat with more headroom is a Black Thunder, or 50' Nortech or Outerlimits. The cabin of the 358/386 is 6' at the base of the step. My wife is 5'2 and can walk through the whole cabin, I am 5'7" and can walk through the first 1/3, then I have to duck my head. The 42/45 has anothere inch or two of headroom. I think there is a 358 in Buffalo, I forget his screen name. Perhaps Tony (GoForBroke) knows him. |
And yes, you can tour my 386 of you want to see the cabin.

I want to show her the cabin of yours, without her seeing the deck room. Can you leave the cover on and let us in through the hatch? hahahah 358 is my first choice so far, however there seems to be more 386's on the market, and if the price if close I will most likely jump up to that. It never ends, and it scares me that you both have "broke" in your screen names :grinser010: |
I love my 358.....cockpit is definatly roomier then the 2004 31' I was looking at when I was searching......the 386 is definatly bigger though.......It really is no big deal though....some people climb on the deck to get sun, some lay on the pad and if I feel we need more room I throw this (see link below) off the back........boat is the perfect size for my needs......easy to trailer....crushes rough water......plenty of cabin and head for overnighting..........LOVE my 358 !!!

and to add one more thing......when running with 6-7 people on board there is plenty of room for people to be sitting and then another row of people standing while holding on to bolsters.........and as was stated befor the cabins in the 358 and the 386 are the same size......

Take Chris up on his tour, you will love it. I think the 38 has the best of both worlds. It has plenty of room, good in rough water, and it dosen't take tons of horsepower to push it.

Exactly how much extra space is in the engine compartment. You have to be double jointed in 9 different ways to change a starter or spark plug in a 31
|
Nice boat!

One more question guys, did the 358 replace the 35ss? If so what year did this happen. Is the brand new 35 a 358 or a 35ss style?
|
Yes it did. I think it was 1997 or 1998? I may be at harbor fest. Come introduce yourself if you see me.
We both have broke in our names because we have both owned the same 31 named Go For Broke. There are actually 3 people with that screen name on oso. |
One thing about cockpits, they do vary from boat to boat of the same model, depending how they were ordered.
The 386 has about 18" ahead of the engines, enough room for a generator. |
4bus, we have a 358 and love it. We have two kids and we can all sleep comfortably and do it every weekend. You're more than welcome to take a tour of ours if you ever around Sacandaga Lake, Broadalbin, NY area. We have 500efi's and they move the boat in the low 70's. Great boat and handles the rough the stuff perfectly.
|
Hey thanks, I will actually be in that area later at the end of this month, however it will be on a thursday or friday day hours. Pm me if you would be around during the day.
What year is your 358? Finally got a guy on the phone at sonic, he was telling me the 2003+ have a light layup and do low 70's with 496ho and 80+ with 500efi??? Sounded to good to be true. |
He is correct I owned a 31 with 500 EFI's I saw 84 on GPS Jim Diesel owns it now and has labbed props and claims 86. I have an article where Teague test drove the 496 boat and claims 76.
|
Mine is a 2002 358 and I have twin 575sci's.......just this year I have seen a high of 84-85 on my GPS speedo......the 575's are rated at 550 at the prop......I couldn't see why a boat with 500's wouldn't see high 70's to 80.......
|
I must have a slug then, mine is a 358 with 500efi's i have only seen 74 turning 5200 rpm's. Its been that way from day one. Maybe we got a crappy pair of motors or maybe we didn't get the light layup.
|
Unless you have CMI's for your exhaust, changing plugs will be fun in anything unless its a 45 Still prob tight with the CMI's on anything under 45 due to engine spacing and boat engine compartment size. My previous 42 had Gill exhaust, and you had to be Gumbi to change the plugs among other things. Could barely fit a hand between the manifolds with your hand open flat.
The 45- no problem changing plugs and working on things. Plenty of room between & around engines. 10 minutes or less to change plugs all around. |

Honestly Gill exhaust is the worst for plug removal, even when you have room. Headers or SM is much easier. I haven't seen the engine bay of the 35, but my friends 31 looks as if a piece of paper would be hard to get in between the manifolds. BUT, you can walk around the entire boat :) The 45 and 42 are nice, but I don't want such a big boat to haul, definately do not want tripps, and I don't want my buddy sharing a seat with me when we are poker running :grinser010: All kidding aside the 45 is a dream boat, just too much for my budget and short season. |
