31 sonic owners ?

am looking to upgrade my twin 496 ho engines to 500-525 hp , anyone out there with this hp range? what props and speeds are you getting?

Plum_Crazy 11-15-2011 12:22 PM

There are some 31's on here with 470HP 500efi engines. I believe they run low 80's. Maybe they'll chime in. You should be looking at mid-80's. What mods do you have planned?

26sonic 11-15-2011 03:47 PM

either going with raylar kit or considering tyler crocket kit. heads , cam etc.

sonicss42 11-15-2011 06:20 PM

Bob Madera aka RMBuilder has a very good reputation for cam selection on all the go fast forums.

I had one with 500 EFI's. It's best ever on GPS was 83. That was with A/C , Ref. , electric head,. Jimmy D. has it now with BBlades reworked props. Jimmy told me he has seen 86, and I believe he also state that he had to take the A/C out.

You know, I've never used my A/C. That may have to come out this winter. :)

if you guys can let me know how to get that kind of mph out of a 31, I would appreciate it.... I have new 8.2 and it runs approx 68mph at 4400 rmp... cracked 70 once but that was it...

kjberman 11-16-2011 10:35 AM

4400RPM??? Did you state that correctly?

My 03' 31 with HO's ran 76 with BBlade Props at 5k RPM - Even hit 77........once.

glenncal1 11-16-2011 10:36 AM

sp- what props, I think those motors should be closer to 5000 rpm for max.

sp123 11-16-2011 11:21 AM

bravo 26" Merc rates the engines for 4400-4800 so i am in the range...perhaps some modification of the engines themselves to try to get more hp.. mine have 380 each, so I am sure I can do something to get more....$$$$$$ any prop suggestions???

Plum_Crazy 11-16-2011 12:44 PM

That explains it. You didn't get the HO's.

If you send your props in for lab finishing to a shop like Bblades, you can get those RPMs more in the middle of the suggested range. Running at low RPMs is actually more stressful to your drivetrain. I like to set my props up to be just below the rev limiter in cool 50° to 60° weather. The 31 also needs a little more cupping to help carry the bow.

thanks for the input...

I'd like to know how you guys are getting low to mid 80's with 500efi's ?? I'm guessing at sea level in good chop?? I have 580hp 502's running stock 28's @4900 and labbed Bblade 28's @5300 both at 77 to 78 mph. Mid summer very HOT and Humid @ 500 ft about sea level very mild chop. I hit 81 in the cold air in the spring but never over 78 again even in 2 to 3 ft chop at the lake.

I'm thinking labbed 30's or nose cones to get more bit out of the labbed 28's? Any thoughts??

45SS 11-17-2011 05:19 AM

You may want to try a 30 pitch prop. My 31 came from sonic with a 30 props on it. that boat would do 81 any day of the week.

go propless 11-17-2011 12:42 PM

Ok thanks I will try a set of 30's in the spring. What rpm's were you turning with them?

East Coast B 11-17-2011 03:37 PM

Let's do the calculation....

It was COLD... You put your fat head down behind the windsreen to keep warm...

boom... extra 3mph!!!

Try that when it's warm and see what you get!!!

How many days to summer? This winter is killing me!!

Enjoy Florida Buddy!

Actually it would only turn about 5100 and change, it would depend on the weather. I think having the A/C, eletric head, microwave, and my wife packing it like a hotel room didn't help. Still a great boat we both miss it.

You can count us in for the Swamp Run for sure. With more boats next year. I'm pretty sure the Pa Posse will there.

Brian , just made reservations in Key West for a night. can't wait for the warm weather. Going to try and see the new 38 while we are down there.

You need to join Bob and crew at the Buffalo Poker Run too.
