Sonic owners, can I get some details about this boat?
1985 Sonic 33 RS
http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/boa/3266950038.html Maybe some details from you guys on what to look for? Right now I have an 87 Baja 240 Sport with a Tyler Crockett 502 making 610 HP.... How much worse will fuel consumption be on this Sonic? Thanks! |
The boat looks nice for the year. But with 330 hp I wouldn't expect too much performance . I'm guessing by the year of the boat it has TRS drives. 330hp through a transmission and a TRS deep in the water will probably be 55 mph . As far as fuel consumption you can estimate double what you use now with your single engine boat. Because this boat is heavy and under powered you will always be running the engines at a higher rpm and higher throttle position multiply that times 2 engines. Your current boat has enough power to turn a larger prop at less rpm to maintain a decent speed ,so your not heavy into the throttle .

I think fuel consumption will be close to the same. Both those motors add up to the hp you have now. I went from a baja 272 with a 502mag to a 31 sonic with twin 454 mags (365hp) and at cruise consumption was the same (ish). Now WOT is another story. Thats a big boat, I think Billyboats is probably right about the speed.

Looks like a nice boat for the age. Look for stress cracks around the cabin door and coming out from the hatches. Spider cracks on the walkaround are strictly cosmetic. Other than that, all the same stuff as any old boat.

Thanks guys!

I would like for a year newer if you can...Where are you exactly?
Glenncal was selling his 85 Sonic 33 RS with 540s for a similar price. He is in Colorado I think. I had an 86 Sonic 36SS. In 86 they went to a newer design for the windscreen, its the molded look...not an actual winshield like that one. Looked better to me. I sold mine for $17k with 502 MPIs, Hydraulic steering and a bunch of other stuff. Was hard to give it away! It ran 62 MPH GPS with 23P 4 Blade REV4 props. SO I dont think this one with 330s is worth that $$. To me, $8k max. Look for rot in the bulkeads too! |
We had an '86 33 SE when I was a kid. They aren't that fast, but they are good rough water boats and well built. My uncle bought it from my father and had Hawk build a pair of 650 HP engines for it. Running through the transmissions and TRS drives, the best we ever saw was 79 GPS. SEs had a higher deck and would weigh more than an RS, but the bottom line is you're going to need big power to run big numbers. I hope that helps!
