OK enough is enough!!!!for your sake Joe the boat runs 55 .....feel better?

audacity 11-12-2002 06:54 AM

i know it is getting old

Dano 11-12-2002 07:28 AM

Yup....the mph number sounds realistic for the HP no doubt. The issue has been in getting everything to "add up" so I'm sure everyone understands the confusion. Originally the question was...what will it take to get to 80+. Props will no doubt be the biggest bang for the buck but it "ain't gonna be enough..." we be needin' mo' power cap'n...

Then of course once ya get 80...then it's 90, then 100 etc etc, man don't ya' love this stuff!

audacity 11-12-2002 07:43 AM

hp really is not the issue...our engines say 525 on top with a 38 foot boat...i'll just say the #'s are in the 90's....my parrents run a 38 with 900sc's (so the engine builder says) and have never seen over mid to upper 80's...we'll get ya hooked up this spring...we should have a massive amount of props on hand to get ya base lined.

Crazyhorse 11-12-2002 08:44 AM

Audacity, you have a habit of sounding like Foghorn Leghorn when he says, "It just don't add up". I guess your board name says it all.

dyno 11-12-2002 11:36 AM

Badeeeep badeeeeep thats all folks!!!!!

audacity 11-12-2002 12:20 PM

i guess i would not have to if they did add up....and how do you think a conversation with a custom prop shop would go???...they are going to tell you the same damn thing!...i have offered help,,,but i think i'll just leave that to you....

as far as my board name...why do you fell it's necessary to rip on me!!? don't assume!

the name comes from a quote...Fredrick The Great...."L’audace, l’audace, tout jour l’audace"...

Dano 11-12-2002 01:01 PM

Dude,
That was a pretty sweet offer on the prop gig. I spent a bloody fortune on props trying to tweak. Tis true without MPH/RPM kinda' tough to lab a pair...

Crazyhorse 11-12-2002 09:35 PM

Dano, I have a friend that went through the prop game a few years back with a 42 Eagle. I think he was dealing with Hydromotive (Dyno, is that who Jack used?). He spent a bunch of money but they really worked with him to find a setup he was happy with. Took him just about a full season though.

dyno 11-13-2002 06:29 AM

Dont take it to heart Joe..... just razzin you man! How do you think I felt when you jump on me telling me how my numbers just dont add up like I'm a total idiot?????I got two things to go by a GPS and a Tach.......If the numbers dont add up I cant help that I'm not bull****ting you to look like my boat is faster than it is.....I realize that your an engineer and think like one and thats how you looked at my post and gave me the best advice you could given the info I gave you,but sometimes your delivery sucks, I know its not intentional but you have a tendency to talk down to people and thats why Crazy took a shot at you. He's a good friend, dont hold it against him if he sticks up for me. He was there ,rode in the boat before and after the mods gps in hand if the numbers dont jive oh well! we'll keep trying, and I respect and appreciate your advice.
Don
P.S thanks to Dano Too!!!!!!

Dano 11-13-2002 07:23 AM

The upswing on the prop testing is I certainly have a pair for just about any situation! Best of luck on dialing in...if your weather is like ours it may be a bit before we get to play again....

Crazyhorse 11-13-2002 08:40 AM

Do you guys prefer to do your test runs in the spring and fall when the air is cooler? That's assuming it's not 90 degrees year-round. And Audacity, I know it gets cold where you are so don't tell me it's 75 and sunny every day.:D I mighta been born at night but it wasn't last night.:D

Dano 11-13-2002 07:10 PM

For maximum MPH absolutely...mid summer you loose several MPH. Even worse for blower motors and carb'd stuff. I change up to two pitch sizes in extreme situations.

45SS 07-11-2010 07:04 PM

My 31 ss was factory built, it would run 81 any day of the week, it had 500HP EFI. The best I ever saw was 84. These were GPS numbers. Jay Ross said this hull in a stripped down model would go 86.

I had the props done by BBlades over the winter and hit a little higher than 84 on GPS :drink:

teamsynergy 07-13-2010 12:51 PM

The best we've hit is 93...but.... higher numbers are in my sights lol

Have to ask!

You running 28s??
What were you running before.Speed..RPM..
RPM now?
How much fuel?
How many people??
Weather conditions???
up river..down river..Lake???
Water conditions and temp????
Wind conditions.head wind. tail wind????

Maybe I should have had them do my blades...Or I need to have someone show me how to run this boat!! :drink:

45SS 07-13-2010 07:50 PM

I was prior owner of Jim's boat. I am glad he has, he takes great care of it. Jim may reply on this also. It just dosen't happen it takes a while to get it wound out and get things tweeked. You just need a good long stretch and some patience. One thing I did notice, when people were making statements about how fast their boat was supposed to be. Remember the factory or Jay only has a 1/4 tank of fuel and a life vest and nothing else. Water, coolers, food, ice, beer, sodas, and for those of you that have a wife or girl friend know how much crap they can pack in a boat. All this is taken into consideration by good prop person.

What were you running before.Speed..RPM.. 80 5000 props were in bad shape
RPM now? 5300
How much fuel? 1/4-1/2
How many people?? 4
Weather conditions??? great
up river..down river..Lake??? down
Water conditions and temp???? 3' and 80
Wind conditions.head wind. tail wind???? not sure

I was running in a Poker Run and had a long stretch were I let it eat! Thanks, 45ss I love the boat its a lot of fun and a head turner looks and sound great! I have noticed the boat likes some strong chop to get on top of the water. I have my a/c out of the boat and the water and waste tanks dry.

GO4BROKE 07-14-2010 06:57 PM

NO AC! Thats barbaric! :lolhit:
Nice numbers.

hunster 07-14-2010 08:21 PM

Thanks for your honesty!! Now I do not feel so bad!!
Interesting that you are running 30's..My ride came with 28's from the factory and I tried to have them worked from that point..Maybe we should have tried some 30's :drink:

FuelinAround 07-15-2010 07:45 AM

Dyno, I find it a little ironic that they are saying your numbers don't add up... I have a 1989 sonic 30.5ss... Been talking go bblades crew and they keep saying that my gear ratio-prop-slip ratios don't make sense. I have stock 454's 330s, 1.5 gear ratio on bravos and bravo 1 props. I gps at 62 mph running 4600 rpm. I don't know what to say other than my numbers are consistent. I am replacing both tachs this winter to make sure my rpms are reading correctly. I was also told that sonics are supposed to have a 1/8in hook in the bottom and it seems this thread is suggesting to get rid of that. My biggest complaint has been pourposing issues. Any trim at all begins to cause a porpoise in my boat and I almost wonder if it's under powered or underpropped not allowing enough stern lift or forward inertia to stay out of the porpoise. I would be interested to see what all you find out.

Bruce at Sonic instructed me NOT to remove the 1/8" hook as it's designed in to stop porpoising. I think your problem would get worse.

Have you checked your drive toe? With your power and spinning outward, you should be running close to parallel or maybe toed-out \ / about 1/16".

FuelinAround 07-15-2010 04:36 PM

Not sure how to check my drive toe....

DareDevil 07-15-2010 05:26 PM

U messure the front of the bullet ( propshaft tip ) center and the back of it , propshaft center !!!!!!

if both read 36 then u have +/- 0 toe, if the front messures 1/16 more u are 1/16 out if the front is 1/16 less u have 1/16 in !!!!!

Also , if u spin outward u should be toe in ( front messurement ) , my 30SS ( same boat ) had 1/8 out !!!

Hope this helps.

Measure between prop shaft centers and measure between the nose cone centers. They should be the same or, for toe out, the nose cones would be about 1/16 to 1/8" further apart.

FuelinAround 07-15-2010 10:58 PM

I will check tomorrow! Wasn't trying to jack the thread just wanted to start some informative old sonic discussion

im MartinB 08-10-2023 10:44 PM

I'm removing my hook this week. It's 3/16" and its fairly consistent from strake to strake. Time to make about 3 pounds of dust. Porpoising only happens at lower speeds and if you want to go slow then simply run a little tab.... These boats don't porpoise above 60mph unless you've run the trim way too high way too soon... But that mean someone had jumped the gun and we all know that never happens.

im MartinB 08-10-2023 10:49 PM

I've noticed I don't loose much speed until it gets super hot AND humid. Ran several times this year when it was almost 90 and was still with in 1 MPH of my record speed. And I'm carbs.

im MartinB 03-29-2024 09:45 PM

I removed the hook from outside strake to outside strake including the tail ends of the lower strakes. Did not affect porpoising at all, and boat require 5 trim now to get free instead of 7. BUT.... all that work and I gained about 1mph so it's not worth it and I would not do it again for sure. 1996
