:D Thanks, going to the paint shop Thursday to check progress... what they tell you on the phone & what you see when your there are usually two different things!!
|
:( Well, not much progress at the paint shop. I had to go rent two stacks of scaffolding for the graphics guy so he did not have to walk over any new paint. I guess that is the problem with color coat/clear coat paint systems on boats! Maybe another week or two.
Started the new engines tonight on the bench. The lightning muffler/tailpipes worked real well, but even so I had people coming over from over 3/4 mile away!! (two housing additions & two coves over!! These things are killer sounding. I can't wait for the boat!!:D |
Looks pretty awesome George!
Can't wait to hear how it runs........ |
Thanks George!! Remember, you had an important part in all this with the engine parts I bought from you. That was an interesting trip.... and quick!! I understand your rig worked out well. I was glad to here it.
I am going to the paint shop again Thursday. They had better made some progress or I am going to kill a painter!!:) |

Well, it looks like delivery this week is out.... again!! They just started color sanding to make some repairs before the "stripper" goes to work... so now we are into next week. It's beginning to look like Labor Day before I splash her. How disgusting!!It won't take me long to finish my work, but this damn paint shop is killin' me!
Here are a couple of pictures of the engine hatch. You can get a feel for what the upholstery will involve from this as the engine hatch is also the rear seat back. |
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Just wanting to get some updated info on the project.

Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
It looks fantastic! I have nearly completely rebuilt my 1988 Sonic 30SS over the years also, but yours is a show stopper, mine is a fish boat. <gg>
I have had a few people do parts of the wiring and I am still not super happy with the results. I recall you totally redid yours, did you put in circuit breakers? I really dislike the stock fuses I have. Do you have the complete rewiring diagram/parts list written up? If you do, I'd like to buy a copy of it off you. |
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Thanks for the kind remarks.
I finally, for real got it out of the paint shop!!! :drink: :drink: :drink: !! We put the engines in & cut the 6" holes for the new tailpipes w/internal mufflers..... only to find they would not fit! :( The good thing is Jan @ Lightning said no problem. Take new measurement & he would remake them. :D They were supposed to be shipped back to me last Friday. As soon as I recieve them I can install the drives & steering. On installing the engines I found a bad wire in the main boat harness. I had purchased two new main harnesses off Ebay while the boat was in the paint shop so I proceeded to replace both harnesses (after the engines & headers were in. Gads, what a pain!! Rewiring again. Last week my new Keith Eickert Dual gauges came in... (four gauges in one). Great price also- complete gauges & senders for all displays for twin engines... $250.00!! These are perfect as I want to install my GPS display IN the dash, these gauges make that possible. I also do not need a GPS speedo because of the dash display so I saved more than the gauges cost!! That pretty hard to do usually. All the pictures taken so far are without the final pin stripping & 7 gallons of clear coat. I will take a few pictures tomorrow & post them as soon as possible. Thanks for the inquiry. It help keep up the energy. |
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!

Now one of the engines in the boat- finally!!
|
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
I will not install the hatch until the mechanicals are installed- tailpipes, drives, bolsters, steering wheel, and of course water tested once... hopefully within two weeks.
The pin stripping took 80 hours & the paint 392 hours. Cost a little more than expected.!!! :drink: What do ya' think now??? :D |
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Lookin' great!!!

Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
An Announcement to FRED!! The garage queen floats again!!
I took it out last Tuesday for a trial run- the first in at least 4 years. Evewrything was great except a problem with the carbs. They are now being blueprinted & flowed for these engines. I used some 1.36 drives and 24P props. The engines were leaning out at the top and I could only get 36-3800 rpm. That will be fixed this next week. The boat comes out of the hole real quick and smooth & the ride was fantastic. I really liked it... this is my first ride in a Sonic. :drink: So far, the project has been rewarding. I have never attempted a project this large before. It was almost like starting with a bare hull as I had stripped it. It's nice to know everything worked with all that has been done. :D |
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
All right! Next we want to see some on the water pics!
|
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Hey George!! Bet you thought I would never make it, didn't ya!!
I should be getting my carbs back Monday or Tuesday. If the rain holds off (it's forecasted for everyday this week) maybe I can get it back in and get a pic or two. Good hearing from you.... and by the way, these are your cranks, rods & heads I'm using. Thanks. George |
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Congrats on getting it wet. I can't wait to hear what speed you get from it. :drink:
|
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Thanks! I installed (temporarily) my GPS so I will have a benchmark for trials. My carbs did not come back today, maybe tomorrow. I am fighting rain all week now. Ya' just can't win!!

Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Thanks, Fred.... more to come!!
|
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
What a great project thread! Congratulations George.

Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Well, it's been awhile now but I have not been sitting on my hands! I have been waiting for my new fuel pumps to come in and my Dominators to get back from Chuck Noone after flowing, etc. I didn't mention earlier but the carbs were so messed up the port engine caught on FIRE!! Scary!! :( I got it out with no problem though.
While waiting I was also building a new back seat assembly for the upholstery to be redone. It is made of 'glassed pressure treated plywood & should never rot again. I had never really been happy with the old dash as it came from Fred (after the new paint). Fred did a nice job on repainting the dash but it just didn't fit the new graphics. Here is a partial picture of the old dash. Something must be wrong with OSO, it will not open the attachment window.......???? I'll try later. |

The .jpg seems to work for me. I know that the .bmp will always show as a clickable link.
Maybe you have an option turned off to view pics in the thread? |
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Or did you possibly when you saved your file as .jpg, did you leave the "save as type" box on the bottom as a bitmap.......causing the file to be called "Picture.jpg.bmp" ???
Post one of your .jpg's and i'll see if i can figure it out. |

I did this before & it didn't work/tried 3 times!! Now it worked. Go figure...... |
Re: The "Too Old's Sonic" Project !!
Ok now, as I said before... I was a little bored with the dash panel and the port side panel was a plain purple plastic piece.... needless to say I had to fix this!!
Here is the new Port dash panel. :D |

That's really purple- not blue. I told my painter I wanted the Starboard side to match & I had purchased a "couple of new gauges" as mine were 1988 models. Here is what I ended up with.
