Air Conditioning

Has anyone installed air in a 386? If so, how much of a pain was it? Where did you put it?

its under the V-birth in my 31 but it was installed at the factory, I'll tell you one thing it takes a beating up there I've had mine worked on the last three years in a row, but that one 90* night its worth it. Crazyhorse just put one in his 38 cigg you might want to PM him.

I talked to Dave about the location of yours last weekend. He told me that you and some other guys were having problems with them mounted in the v-birth. I'll try to find a place further back. I was looking for some ideas about where to locate the vents.

Your right about it being worth it.

BN's 31 has it installed in the cabinet under the galley sink.

That would be a good spot !! but the wife would kill me if she lost that storage.

Sonic installs the AC unit in the compartment aft of the head. I installed my AC and can tell you that it is a tight fit, and once again very much worth it.

The return vent is cut out just starboard of the cabin door along the step, the charge air duct is installed forward of the hanging locker. You run the duct work through the compartment under the sink in the head and come out in the hanging locker, be sure to mount the grill high for proper air flow in the cabin.

The raw water pickup is in the engine compartment. If you look closely in the bilge, you will see a small “thick section” (for lack of a better description) gelled in – this is the spot for the ball valve/water pickup.

Finally, with regards to the electric connection – depending on the year of your boat, you may get lucky and wiring is already run, otherwise run the wire under the step, under the (galley) sink and to the breaker panel (breakers are already installed)

Good Luck- remember it’ll be worth it !
