Rotating Drives Inward

Has anybody ever tried rotating their drives inward on a 31 or other Sonic? Was there any improvement on speed? Any loss of handling?

Not much difference in speed but handling will be affected especially in close quarters. For a quick try swap props and run the boat with the shfters in reverse. Takes a little getting used to when docking for the first time but a quick way to try it without much work

Dano has talked about it before. Much looser handling. Possible 1-2mph faster I think.

Depends on HP, drive ratio's, water conditions etc. Handling at the dock is just different (reversed) not bad once you acclimate. Just try it, no biggie, don't like it then change back, pretty simple procedure. If I remember your running the 375HP mag? If so spinning them in will get you some mph. If you run in flatter water not only more speed but more bow lift as well. Go for it.

I know that you are supposed to be able to just swap the props on a bravo, but a merc mechanic told me a few years ago that once a bravo has been spinning 1 way for a while, there is more of a tendancy to break if you run it hard the other way. Fact or fiction?

Anyway, I just got my props back from Houston Prop and I can't wait until May so I can try them out. I probably will try swapping the props and running them inward too.

I was told buy a Merc. tech to swap the drives every 50 hours to run them both ways to get more life out of them.

Dano 01-06-2004 12:29 PM

Fiction...run'm hard enough and you'll break them regardless:eek:

I will try out the new props first and then try rotating the drives in next. Now I really can't wait until spring! :(

PS. I don't run my boat hard much, but I will obviously be running hard when I switch the props to see what the results are.

Sounds like a solid strategy...good luck.

Had mine spinning in for awhile, boat felt more loose, ran a couple mph faster, harder to handle around docks.
Have 'em spinning out now.....seems to handle better, especially in rough water
