38 versus 42?
 

I'm upgrading once I sell my 34' Scarab. Been looking at a lot of boats, including the 38' and 42' Sonics (1999 to 2001 years). Other than length and perhaps some extra cabin space in the v-berth, is it worth the jump to the 42? I'd like to hear from some 42' owners what they think about their boat.

I seriously considered one at the Miami show in 2003... The 42 is HUGE compared to the 38 (at least the interior). The 42 is, IMHO, hands down the best configered cabin/v-berth/head arrangement anywhere in that price range but it does come at a cost. That cost is primarily in the top-end speed. That 42 that I mentioned only did 72-73 GPS with 525 EFI's with ITS and Bravo XR drives. That was simply too slow for me although the price was right coming in at $240k-ish. I think it's an AWESOME boat and it rode well! I would like to see what it'll do with a pair of naturally aspirated 600-700HP engines... then I might reconsider.

None of that sounds too bad to me, I'm in a 34' Scarab that runs 70 maximum on a good day. But then again, running hard and fast at top speed is far down my priority list. They do seem to be priced right. Not many available right now by owner, will have to keep my eyes open and check them out.

I think the cockpits are the same (in twin configuration) and the 42 has more cabin and more engine room.

The 42 has side by side bolsters with a side cabin entrance for an larger head. The 386 has separate bolsters and a center cabin entrance. The 45 and the 42 have the same cockpit as does the 358 and the 386. each of the two larger boats have bigger engine compartments for more goodies and triple engines. Though I have seen a triple 42.
I have had 2 42's and an older 41SE. We have been looking at possilbly a 386. Just like the ride and the cabin is laid out different. The 42 is a fantastic boat with a great ride (actually kind of boring sometimes). Would not begin to tell you which one to pick. Depends on your personal preferences.

Bill, good to hear from you, thanks for the input. I've also been dabbling a bit hoping to find a Black Thunder, not many on the market right now from what I can see unless you want to pay top dollar from BT's brokerage. :) The Sonics are really outfitted well in the cabin. Heck, I even like some of the late 90 Cig Topgun layouts. Anyways, the BT down your way I understand went through drives like Grant through Richmond. Have to sell the Scarab before I can move on anything at this point. Your signature says it all!! Say hi to Mrs. 43Thunder will ya?

Heya Patti, I might be down there a few times this season on a buddy's 27' Sea Ray. We're usually over at Tims Rivershore near the RR tracks, or over near some cliffs at the mouth of the Occoquan. Will try to give you a heads up before I come down.
