Seetek's /45 Sonic
What ever heppened to this particular 45 Sonic with 820 Seeteks. I read an article about a year ago, it seemed real interesting, but never found out the particulars, top speed and so on. What drives did it have. Thanks Jeff

Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Last I knew they wanted to crack 100 with it and were trying to find more speed. I think it was running high 80's. Bruce felt they needed triple digits to interest high end poker runners and justify the cost.

Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
It just really interested me, I was entertaining thought for my next boat, and the 45 Sonic is the same weight and size as my 4300 Nortech. Ive actually only once hit my top speed of 84 with twinn TMP 750's, I actually cruise 90% of the time between 3500-4000RPM's/52-62mph, and looking at more effecient applications. So that makes sence to me, more hp/tq, but at approx 1800 pounds heavier over my 600CI motors, thats where I see the only down fall, I thought the torque as well as the surface drives what have made up for that. I personally would be happy with those numbers, I thought it was a cool project. :D Jeff

Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
The last I heard, the Sea-Tek Sonic was dialed in to mid-high 90s. Jeff, I think the more efficient hull of the Nortech would put you into Triple Digits.

Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Sydways, I know the Nortech hull is more effeicent, (not knocking the 45, I had a 42)but I also know the weight is about 1200 pounds more in the Nortech, so it might be a wash. I'm also uncertain on the Sea-Teks vs Yanmars, this is just a consideration for my next boat. The new 440/500's is much lighter, but the Sea-teks make awesome power, I just don't know enough about them, and reliability, but am open into checking them out. I'm checking both out at the Ft Laud show. I just wish the owner of the Sea-tek Sonic would chime in or send me a private email. Thanks Jeff

Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Jeff,
I believe Innovation Marine in FL. is the USA rep for Sea-Tek. If I remember correctly, seems as though they do allot of Navy contract work as well as sealed race engines for the Offshore circuit. I believe they also do all the maintance and rebuilds at there facility. I talked with them a few years back, super nice people. I memory serves me, seems like you had to stay with the 800's or less for long term reliability. The larger ones take to people to run, you actually have a two people throttling, one for the engines and the other person for the second pair of turbo's on the big dogs. I guess it's quite an art and easy to melt them down. Kinda weird how it all worked with my mind not being to fresh on the subject. With the 800's or less it's a single person operation. Cougarman |
Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Cougarman, thanks for the info, I will check it out. The Sea-tek 820's or even their 750's would be max. I'm really into reliability, and thats what I have in my motor and drive set up presently on my 4300 Nortech. Im looking at a dual motor boat, no tripps for me. In a 4300 they new Yan's would get me only around 70-72, to slow for me, what Im looking at would to do a project in the mid 80's, and the only way with the Yan's would be a 42 OL. and light lay up, and thats still questionable if I will get over 82mph. If I go with Sea-tek vs Yan's, they weigh more, give you more power, but uncertain of resale and reliability, just looking at all options right now. Looking forward to the show. Thanks for the help guys. :D Jeff

Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Jassman, check with Hustler Boats. Joe is a super nice guy, has lots of experience with diesels, running them for years in his own boat.
Their 50 foot with twin Yanmar 440s is sweet! |
Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Jeff,
OL also built a 37' I believe???????? Anyway's not sure the size is right, but it had the Catapillars in there running a touch over 80. Nice set-up with a two stage tranny for idling around and getting on plane. Once on plane it uses the upper end of the Tranny. OL said the nice part about it is the Diesel's are goverened so you just leave your throttles to the dash and the governer's take care of the rest for you. This conversation was a few years back so don't quote be to be exact..........but info should be pretty close. Cougarman |
Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Jeff Just go ahead and get the 50 Hustler or the Outerlimits.I think if ya put the 525 or find some 575 and up grade either and be in the low 100mph :D
I test drove a 50 Hustler with trip 500efi's and ran about 82mph. The shop here put prochargers in it and got it up around 100.Both boats are fast with stock power.Thats the reason I bought what I did starting out in the 80's with stock power. :D But ya now we are never satisfied ,I am satisfied with my size but its NEVER fast enough. |
Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Sonics 45 weighed in at 12900 and hit 98 miles per hour. The 820's had been turned up a bit and making about a 1000hp. The boat would have broke a 100 but I am pretty sure it was the drive set up that slowed it. Arnesons would have been a better choice. I have researched the seateks for a boat I am building and would still prefer them to any diesel or gas engine. It makes the best hp per pound of any of the diesels. Basic rebuild is needed like a high hp gas engine but only burns half the fuel at WOT. Talk to Super Termoli about them I may still have an email from him regarding costs.

Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Jeff, the boat was at Sonic in June and it was not sold at that time. They may still have it for sale.

Re: Seetek's /45 Sonic
Thanks Viper 7, I had a 2000 42 Sonic, great boat, my ex-partner still has it. I presently have a 04 Nortech 4300, and love it. Want to do a 05 4300 or a modified deck version of a 42 Outerlimits. Took a ride in a 42 OL with Mike at Ft.Laud show and was extremely impressed, just like always, trying to come up with more coin. Have a good holiday guys, Jeff
