From Mag to HO

I changed my 496 mag into a HO by replacing cam and Ecm. Increased speed from 65.5 GPS to 71.2 GPS. This is on a 2006 288 midcabin. Condtions were 60 degrees with 1ft. chop. Fresh water with two people on board weighing 475 pounds. Would like to here some numbers from other 288 midcabin owners. I should also say the motor has no other modifications. :D

are you still running a stock bravo 1, or did you opt for a bravo X in your boat?

I bet you got more than 50 hp gain if you got almost 6 mph gain. :D

Re: From Mag to HO

I am running the bravo one. I think your right about more than 50 hp gain. My thought was it would take CMI to get to 70mph with the cam and ECM change. Most posts I've read say 2 to 3 mph gain from Mag to HO. This was a great surprise. Not sure if Headers will do much more. What do you guys think?

Re: From Mag to HO

mess,

I am interested in doing the same conversion from mag to HO on my 04' 496 mag. Are the only things you need to change for the conversion the ECM and cam out of the HO? or are there any other little parts needed? And finally approximate costs of the parts? I can install myself.

Thank you,

SB30

Hey sb30,
New HO ECM & HO cam were the only changes I made to the motor. Purchased from BAM marine. ECM was around $1380 & cam was $419. I was very happy with the results.

mess,

Thank you very much for the information. 2k for 50hp is not a bad deal so I think i will call BAM marine and do the same.

Thanks again,

SB30

Re: From Mag to HO

30 Outlaw I used a authorized mercuriser dealer for the install. The cost was $1550 for installing the cam,ECM & full hydraulic steering. I could'nt believe it was that cheap. That's the first time I was surprised in a good way when it comes to paying a bill.

Re: From Mag to HO

mess, how many hrs were on the motor when you installed the ho cam? did you replace the cam bearings also? I have an '04 288 & am considering the mag to ho upgrade or going w/ the Raylar heads, cam & intake. did you check into reman ecu's? they are about half price.

The only one that can reprogram the 496 computer is Whipple Industries otherwise you have to buy a new one from Mercury

Did they have to pull your motor to do the install?

Re: From Mag to HO

I'm thinking this is the way to go....Maybe pull the heads and have them worked a little put some roller rockers on as well. I'm curious if they had to pull the motors as well would be close to get that cam out over the top of the seat, but looking at it I think it can be done....I have my winter project.... :D

Hey 30OL give me a shout. I think your on PBP you can PM me your # I lost it awhile back and can't get ahold of you on TBM anymore so if you could PM me your # I'd like to chat with you more about the CMI's I still haven't put mine on and am seriously thinking about putting the cam and ECM remap while doing it. It can't be that hard to put a cam in seeing as I'll be doing into it that far I might as well do it all at once.

Irishtornado 03-25-2007 09:32 PM

Has anyone else tried this and seen the same results? I know that the only difference in the 2 motors is the cam and ECM so for that kind of money its definately a bargain. I know the $5000 upgrade when ordering includes the X drive, but the standard bravo will handle 425hp all day long.

DPA 04-12-2007 09:39 AM

Im also looking at this...

Raylar can remap the ecm, their BP102 cam and get 436HP at the crank. You can add their heads and intake later and get at least 500HP.

Gentlemen, I think the throttle body is diffrent also......
Iheard $900 to remap ECU.......enjoy!:drink:
