mid cabin vs closed bow
It sounds like a midcabin will be a little slower than a closed bow, is this true? Is it because of the wind?
|
I've heard this too, I think its cause there just heavier due to more materials? They seem to have a lot more imo
|
I think its cuz anyone who buys an open bow (at least the few I boat with) are pansies and dont push the throttles far enought forward!!!! :evilb:
|
I Have a mid cabin with a 525 whippled motor that runs 93. Do you think that I'm a pansie running that speed in a 28' long boat.
|
Aero drag. Could be a difference in weight but I have not seen any numbers.

2. I think you are scared to get passed by me so that answers #1 question:eek::popcorn: |
The mid cabin is a tad slower but not by much. A lot has to do with the wind drag. If the front cover is open, you WILL lose 2-3 mph. With is closed, you will only lose 1-2. The air is forced down into the cabin or against the cabin door.
This loss of mph can always be taken back by more power! EagleDM's with the 525 runs about 80-81 and LiveWires runs about 82 with a Raylar 700 and Whipple. BTW, both boats are for sale. |
I love the MCOB, I will admit we have not used it but I like the idea of having it, I just bought the boat so the weather has been on the cool side for it but next summer I am sure we will use it.
|
I currently have the closed, but for me the forward space is mostly wasted or storage with the wife's "junk", and always hot. I think the MCOB would be more usable and get the best of both, but still like the speed and handling & style of closed.

MCOB's aren't going to be any slower than the closed deck versions. If both the cabin doors are open then the air will flow through the cabin with no resistance.
The V-berth is worthless in closed deck boats in FL due to the heat. With the MCOB the mid cabin has a nice breeze flowing through it at idle or slow speed. You get shade and a breeze! |

! There are a lot more variable to contend with such as who has more in the boat, how much fuel, and the varied HP in each of the 496's. But overall, I would say they are damn close but the CB usually pulls away. Doesnt run away, but walks away. |

is there a difference in rough water handling? ( Lake Michigan) I`m really starting to like the 32' midcabin set up.. this way the kids got somewhere else to go instead of us being on top of each other..

I like mid/open bow alot better than closed bow where we boat in Lake Havasu, but a few weekends a year I wish it was a closed bow so I dont have to deal with all the people. Frank
