2008 Sunsation 288 Step Hull

Summer is over.........but
I was wondering how much are you trimming the outdrive with 288 step Hull, seems like i do not need as much as a standard v-hull.
I have k-plans and leaving them level with Hull.
Thanks.

Hello,

I have 05 288. There is very little to no difference if I use trim. I have just started playing with my trim tabs level with the hull.

Seems like you do not need to trim the drive with the step hull.

rak rua 09-26-2021 06:45 PM

Part of tne theory behind stepped hulls is that you need little or no trim. All the power is directed at pushing the boat forward rather than upward and forward. Can’t speak for the Sunsation but my old Donzi 27 ZR ran best with just a touch of trim up. Anything more just increased revs and prop slip, but not speed. Same setting for the tabs, except for getting on the plane or to balance the boat in a beam sea.

2008 288 step hull prop

Also, what prop is everyone running with the 2008 and up 496 HO step hull??
Heard grinding the diffuser ring off helps.

Running a 26 pitch Bravo 1 and it wants to run fast all the time, tried a 24 Bravo and it does not need to run as fast as the 26 all the time, was better overall.

Don"t you find you have to run the boat fast at all times?? Have you tried a 24 pitch?

wsinglem 10-26-2021 09:37 AM

Looking at a Bravo 1 24 pitch now.....

wsinglem 11-27-2021 07:23 AM

WOW.... has anyone noticed the price of props went up. :(

Pretty sure my Donzi ran a 26” Bravo. Boat wouldn’t plane much under 30 mph but I’ve heard the 496ho is comfortable cruising between 3500-4000 rpm’s, which is well above 30 mph. In rough water it was annoying, couldn’t plane at 25 so I was either falling off the plane or running a bit faster, trying to miss tne potholes..🙂

My Formula 292 with steps barely needs any drive trim up. maybe 1-2 bumps off full down. anything higher just wastes power. It's a funny feeling coming from a no step hull where you trim it up to gain speed/efficiency. I then use the trim tabs to keep it level side to side as the wind and my passengers move around.

I have some pics of the vent tubes, but cant post them till i have 10 Posts lol

Found these on Vent Tubes 288 Sunsation

waterman 12-01-2021 08:48 AM

Hello,

The tubes on my 288 fell off so I had to make new ones. I used 1/2 pvc. Hard to do and the curve is not as smooth as the original.

wsinglem 12-01-2021 09:01 AM

Could you tell the difference?

waterman 12-01-2021 10:30 AM

Hello,

I was having a very bad vibration over 50 and my dealer put a tube they received from Sunsation on and the vibration went away.

It’s strange because the tube they put on fell off and the vibration didn’t come back. I originally put on two straight tubes at 3/8 and then someone else at Sunsation told me to put on 1/2 and curve it like the picture above.

I don’t think the tubes I put on extend as far after the bend.

Mine is gone...... not sure it had one. I will try and make one this summer to see what it does.

Seen this too https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...ge-2004-a.html

Where can I get a set of tubes at. Mine are long gone.

I could make a set. What are the dimensions?

Thanks

waterman 05-11-2022 08:29 AM

Hello,

I had to go under my boat and match it up by trial and error. I talked the the factory and they don’t have the template anymore.

What dia tubing did you use?

waterman 05-12-2022 12:08 PM

Hello,

1/2 inch pvc. Doing the bend in the tube was tricky, and I used 4200. I wish the factory would have used something stronger.

Can’t speak for the newer hulls….but my
old “‘94 Dominator (just a straight delta pad boat…no steps or anything like you’ve got pictured there) took some tricks to get on plane. Anything less than fully tucked in drives and tabs maybe half way down or the props would just blow out. They were standard 25 pitch props if I recall correctly. Even still, it required a little back and forth on the sticks for them to bite in and get up on plane. Nice to see they’ve at least made improvements there.

wsinglem 06-16-2022 12:08 PM

Anyone got a pic of the tube???
Thanks

waterman 07-06-2022 10:06 PM

Hello,

This is the best pic I could get. My boat has a problem where the hull gets stuck. Sometimes I can’t go past 50 at full speed and I have to hit a few waves to go faster.

Are you running on a flat lake all the time??
Thanks for the Pics.

waterman 07-07-2022 05:58 AM

Hello,

I drive on both. I’m on a smaller lake so the waves aren’t too bad but I’ve had the problem on both calm and choppy days.

SB 07-07-2022 06:37 AM

Several ways to bend pvc.
here’s a random vid i found…there are many more.

Mine Does the same thing. My tube is long gone. Figured it had to do with the tube missing.

wsinglem 04-03-2023 09:12 AM

Anyone still got the "Tube" attached from last year?? :lolhit:

wsinglem 08-07-2023 01:06 PM

Was at the 2023 Sunsation Fun Run, Street Fair and Tiki Barge party:champs:
Had a great time

But, did not see one vent tube on any boats there .

Jeff Sunsation 08-11-2023 09:37 AM

Rougher water sometimes does help the boat get "unstuck". Real flat water you are probably going to have an issue. The tubes do actually work. Just a quirky engineering feature! 3M 4000 Sealant should work well on holding it as long as the surface is prepped properly. I can walk you through the process if needed.

Quirky? I thought those pictures were a joke.

So....what wasn't engineered correctly with the factory design that made this "feature" a thing? Are the steps not deep enough?

Seriously, I am curious.

Just let me be clear that those photos are NOT from the factory like that. The original tubes from the factory were stainless steel then changed over to a pvc material. Most people don't even realize they are there. It breaks that suction to the water and helps aerate the step area. There are other boat manufacturers out there that have similar features. Some are built right into the step. I say it's quirky because it's not a common thing you see out there but it serves a purpose. It all has to do with the design of the stepped hull. Our engineer here can give you more info on it if you ever need it.
