Left hand on 288??
How about it??? Has anyone tried a Left handed prop on there 288???
Wondering what it would do for High speed chine walking, and top speed??? Right now my 288 with a 28"P bravo 1 chine walks over 72 mph. I can usually drive thru it to get to 80 MPH, But It's not fun:( Also going to try a Hydromotive 4 blade this weekend to see if it helps with speed and walking. The boys at Hydromotive seem to think so???? |
It's hard to nip the chine on a single application especially with an 8'1" beam and large pitch props without increasing weight and shying to the starboard side on a right hand application and vice on a left hand. I would think a left hander would increase a single's chine due to less weight (drivers weight sits starboard) on the port side to counter torque?...
|
Kanookstr, Have you tried the hydromotive? I'm having same problems, wondering if it helped. What pitch did they recommend for your 288. I think reckless288 post is right, but any little thing would help. Daveb
|
Yes I did try a Hydro this weekend daveb, It was slower, and it created way to much transom lift. I lost about 4 MPH. Going to try a 29" 3 blade maybe this weekend.
So far I can spin my Bravo 1 4 blade 28" to around 5200-5300. But keep in mind Reckless and myself are super charged, not stock. My 288 came with a rev 4, 23" stock. but they went back to a 24" bravo 1 . |
I also have a supercharged 288. I'm working with mercury racing dailing in props. Thanks for the info on the hydro. , let me know how the 3 blade turn out.
|
Yes, Yes I will daveb, You keep us informed as well with merc racing props
|
Kanookstr couple questions, I am looking at buying a 288. Does the chine walk happen all the time at that speed? You said you can drive though this, does the chine walk stop after a seretin speed? Power boat magazine mention this in dec 1999 with the HP500. How do like the your boat? thanks.
|
Kanookstr, I'd love to be super-charged, but I'm just a plain ole run of the mill stock guy. You're probably thinking of Splinter....;)
|
Yes your right Reckless288, I ment splinter:):)
Nitro/Max I love my 288, It's my favorite boat to date, but it's not an easy one to drive at speeds above 70...I did notice that on water with 1.5+ chop, the chine walking is a little more controlable. But on anything less than 1.5' chop, It's tough... |
It's hard to get an offshore hull to run stable in glassy conditions due to the sharp deadrise which is meant more for cutting/slicing than running high plane. A Friend of mine had a 22' Donzi with a 350mag and a step. The boat would not run straight and level on smooth water no matter what you did trim/tab wise. It would flop to one side or the other. In some chop it ran flat and comfy....Just some additional insight....
|
On flat water over 70mph gps my 288 will get into it's own rhythm or chine walk. This was very hard for me to control the boat at first, when the boat falls off its pad you must be steering it back before it falls. It's been a full yr. and i'm just getting the feel of the boat and steering right. for me it took alot of seat time, and i need more but can drive it in the upper 70s. In choppy water stable at all speeds....more additional insight..
|
Hey guys, I had 1997 23'3" scarab with the 502MPI ran over 70 all the time never chine walk. Had it 5 years great boat. Daveb and kanookstr do you have the hydrolic steering on your boats? Sory to hear about your motor kanookstr.
|
Well things are looking real good for the engine (fingers Crossed)
The engine builder I deal with for all My machine work, just informed me that I need 2 pistons, and complete ring set. The heads are 100%, but he's throwing in a set of new valve seals. I dropped the engine of Wed. night, he had it torned down by 11:00 am thursday, and today (friday) he called me to inform me he had all the parts, and I can pick up the short block Monday afternoon!!!! So It looks like I'll have my baby back for my 2 weeks Vaca starting next Saturday:D:D:D (fingers crossed;)) |
Imco single ram hyd.steering. It made the drive very solid, but noticed little help on stabilty. Kanookstr is your drive stock, wondering how it was handling hp.
|
Yes my drive is stock, except for a billet drive cap, with built in shower. I also run redline oil, and a teaspoon of Prolong additive.
I had 3 seasons on the old boats outdrive with no problems. It's all in how you drive. Hole shots, and re-entries with out pulling back on the throttle really hurts the drives |
Wow, I'm disappointed to hear about the handling. I just saw the 288 mid-cabin in person for the first time this past weekend. I was convinced that it would be my next boat (moving up from a Baja 232). Now I'm not so sure.
|
Don't be so quick to put the Sunsation down on handling Ric232, All boats handle different at high Speeds. Just in the short time sense my last post on this thread, I had just a little more seat time, and I gained alot more experiance and control:) I never owned a boat with a pad, and it took getting use to. It's the same for alot of boats. But now I love the ride even more. Those 80+ MPH runs are a pleasure to ride now:p :p A close friend of mine with a BAJA H2X had serious handling problems when he went over 75 MPH, Now after seat time (and hydrolic Steering:D:D)he's going around 80 MPH. Good luck on your search for your next boat, and give the Sunsation a try first, You'll be impressed:cool:

Re: Left hand on 288??
News to Note;
We put a new hull under the 288 for 2005 for the specific reasons every one is talking about here. It's a small single step and COMPLETELY removed the ill handling at upper speeds, also eliminated the slight porpoise in flat water. While the 288 has been an Excellent boat over the years, it was going faster and faster every year due to better drives, more horsepower, props, etc. and certainly was a needed change. Also for 2005, new Fairing, New Dash Panels, Standard Monster Gauges, More Leg Room, Glovebox, Cabin Lighting, etc. We’re always moving forward to Exceed Your Expectations !! Any questions, please give us a call. DaveSunsation 810-794-4888 |
Re: Left hand on 288??
i have the new 288 hull with 525efi/its steering 78 mph on gps calm water i get
little chime walk.boat rides better than any other 28 footer out their i use this boat on lake winnie in newhampshire. its a rough lake with lots of boat wake in every direction. this boat handles it awesome no shakes/rattles/solid as a rock im very happy with the strenght of this boat . one test ride in rough water and you will buy one. |
Re: Left hand on 288??
I also have a new full stepped 05 288 and am very happy overall with the boats handling and performance, and sunsations customer service made the purchase even easier. With an H.O. Im seeing speeds in the low 70's. The only thing I'm not too thrilled about is that after only 14 hours, I have a stress cracks forming in the corners of my fairing.. :( waiting at this point to see if they get any worse...
|
Re: Left hand on 288??
hey chris
where are the stress cracks exactly i have a fairing with the lexan extention i have 43 hrs i want to look for them on mine. |

Rotax, here is where the first signs of stress cracks are appearing. Like I said, at this point ( only 14 hours ) i'm going to see if they get worse... My 96 23 foot Baja had 225 hard hours on it and not a single stress crack, so you can see whey I am a little upset.. if it does not get any worse or develop anywhere else we will see.. I am currently running the boat on the upper hudson river in NY in pretty mild conditions,, so we will see if this becomes a bigger concern. :(

After looking at the new hull, I have to agree with the above, this hull has noticable changes that are a direct result of engineering and testing in the water. It is impressive to say the least. The boat we brought back to FL was sold in a week. Anyone shopping for a 29 or 32 should at least take a look at these boats.

Re: Left hand on 288??
hey chris288 thanks for the picture
i will check mine this weekend let ya know next week. whats that on your center dash a compass. did you not get the speedo in the center |
Re: Left hand on 288??
I got the speedo and tach side by side,, I guess i'm a little selfish and wanted the gauges all to myself :) just kidding, I think it looks better as does my wife. I ended up putting a Livorsi in dash compass,,, it's a tiny bit small for the " BOSS " it's mounted in but all in all nobody would ever notice except for myself and I think it looks great..
P.S. yah,, let me know if your having stress cracks also :( .. Thanks .. chris |
Re: Left hand on 288??
hey chriss288
well i looked .no stress cracks . that seems like a weird place to have cracks it might of came like that from the factory . it seems like a defect ??? call sunsation and see what they say. good luck any way im getting use to the boat with the its box it does not need much trim. boat rides real nice at 55/60 in the rough water. |
Re: Left hand on 288??
Hey Chris I Can't Believe That You Have A Problem With Your Boat. I Have Been Selling And Delivering Faster Than They Can Build Them. I Have'nt Seen Any Stress Cracks. From What I See In Your Picture It Is Just Gel-coat Crack. This Happens From Time To Time On Any Boat Part That Has A Radius. I Am Sure That Sunsation Will Take Care Of It. Ps It's Not Structural Nor A Defect.
|
Re: Left hand on 288??
Mark, I was under the impression all stress cracks were just gel-coat cracks ?? I obviously know it's nothing structural, just ticks me off they have appeared after only about 14 hours... on a side note, after taking it in the ocean over the weekend, they haven't gotten any worse, and of course Sunsation has offered to fix it.. At this point I am going to hold off on any type of repairs and see how the boat holds up for a season or so and see if things stay the same or get worse.
