Wyatt and Stotler win Superboat Unlimited class in Key West
By The Associated Press November 19, 2005 KEY WEST, Fla.- Powerboat racers Rich Wyatt and Herb Stotler piloted DF Young to first place Saturday in the Superboat Unlimited class at the Key West World Championship. Wyatt, of Pittsburgh, and Stotler, of Fort Lauderdale, averaged 115.87 mph over the 40.6-mile course in their catamaran. Defending champions David Scott and John Tomlinson finished third, but a combined average speed of 108.01 mph in the championship's first two races give their Budweiser Select a slight lead going into Sunday's final race. Unlike previous races, both lap count and points will be doubled in Sunday's race. Scott and Tomlinson are tied in points with Wyatt and Stotler. Big Thunder, owned by Bob Morgan of Gravois Mills, Mo., is less than three points behind. Sunday's "race is a longer race and anything can happen," said Tomlinson, who is seeking his 10th world championship title. "We're going to hope for some rougher water. That's what we need." In the Super Vee class, French racers Michael Karsenti and Serge Allegre have a solid lead in Rodriguez Group-Fountain. The season-ending finale for Superboat International Productions and American Power Boat Association championship features 65 registered boats. ___ |
