Scott and Tomlinson repeat win at Key West World Championship
By The Associated Press
November 20, 2005

KEY WEST, Fla.- Powerboat racers David Scott and John Tomlinson successfully defended their Superboat Unlimited-class title on Sunday at the Key West World Championship.

Scott of Edwardsville, Ill., and Tomlinson of Miami led the fleet of 65 boats entered in the 78.4-mile race around Key West harbor and surrounding waters. Their catamaran Budweiser Select averaged 98.68 mph for the 13-lap race.

Budweiser Select won the championship's first race on Wednesday, and placed third in Saturday's race. Scott and Tomlinson entered Sunday's race tied in points with DF Young, with Big Thunder less than three points behind.

"Whoever was going to win had to win today," said Tomlinson, who picked up his 10th world championship. "I had to get out it in front and get it out there in a hurry. It's much harder to pass."

DF Young, piloted by Rich Wyatt of Pittsburgh and Herb Stotler of Fort Lauderdale, finished second while Big Thunder, owned by Robert Morgan of Gravois Mills, Mo., was third in Superboat Unlimited.

French powerboat racers Michel Karsenti and Serge Allege picked up a Super Vee-class world title in Rodriguez Group-Fountain, while New Jersey racers Kevin Hans, Augie Pensa and Val Fiorillo won the Manufacturer Production 4-class in Team Nesquick.

The championship closes the season for powerboat racers competing within Super Boat International Productions and American Power Boat Association sanctioning bodies.

KEY WEST · Powerboat racers David Scott and John Tomlinson successfully defended their Superboat Unlimited-class world championship Sunday at the Key West World Championship.

Scott of Edwardsville, Ill., and Tomlinson of Miami jumped out in front at the start of the of the 13-lap, 78.4-mile race around Key West harbor and surrounding waters.

Their Budweiser Select catamaran easily maintained the lead, and its 98.68 mph average speed was the fastest of the fleet of 65 registered boats.

After winning Race 1 Wednesday and placing third during Race 2 Saturday, Budweiser and two other boats, D.F. Young and Big Thunder Marine, were just a few points apart.

"Whoever was going to win had to win today," said Tomlinson, who picked up his 10th world championship.

"I had to get it out in front and get it out there in a hurry. If the boats are running together, it's much harder to pass."

D.F. Young, piloted by Rich Wyatt of Pittsburgh and Herb Stotler of Fort Lauderdale, finished second and Big Thunder, owned by Robert Morgan of Gravois Mills, Mo., was third in Superboat Unlimited.

"It was a little too rough for us out there today," said Stotler, who won Saturday. "We're better in the flat water. We're going to work on our rough-water setup in the offseason this year.

"We have to find out why it's so critical that one more foot of wave height slows us down. Key West is about rough water and we choose to come here."
